Today’s devotion reminds us that another person’s emotional state does not have to become ours; the Spirit can help us bring a redemptive tone into the room.

Scripture: Romans 12:2
Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.
The Pressure I Feel
I can enter a room and immediately let someone else’s anger, anxiety, hurry, or negativity tell me how I should feel and respond.
The Grace I Receive
The Holy Spirit can establish a steadier tone within me, giving me freedom to respond redemptively instead of simply matching the emotional temperature around me.
Reflection
People who have not learned to set their own emotional tone usually become very good at looking for external cues.
What kind of mood is my spouse in? Is my supervisor irritated? Are people anxious about this? Is the room tense? Does everyone else seem afraid? Should I be upset too?
We can do this so quickly that we barely notice it happening. Someone else raises the emotional temperature, and within moments we are living at the same temperature.
Pastoral care has taught me another possibility. When someone I am ministering to becomes agitated or angry, matching that agitation rarely helps them. The emotions are real and deserve to be heard. But I do not have to become agitated or angry in order to take them seriously.
Calm presence can change what becomes possible in the room.
That is not detachment. I am not standing outside the person’s pain. I am remaining steady enough to enter it without being governed by it.
This is one way the renewing of the mind becomes visible. The world around us offers a tone and says, “Join this.” The Spirit creates enough interior space for another question: “What kind of presence is needed here?”
Sometimes the answer is tenderness. Sometimes firmness. Sometimes silence. Sometimes courage. Sometimes a clear boundary. But none of those require me to surrender my inner state to the strongest emotion in the room.
Agency means I get to decide how I will respond. More importantly, I can invite the Holy Spirit to lead that decision so the tone I bring has the possibility of becoming redemptive.
I may not be able to calm the other person. That is not mine to control. But I can refuse to make the room less steady by abandoning my own center.
Formation Practice
When you encounter someone else’s strong emotion today, notice the impulse to match it, defend against it, or escape it. Pause and ask: “What kind of presence does the Spirit invite me to bring here?” Choose your tone before you choose your words.
Prayer of Formation
Holy Spirit,
Make me aware of the emotional tones I absorb without noticing. When fear, anger, hurry, or negativity rises around me, keep me grounded in You. Help me bring a presence that is calm without being passive, compassionate without being controlled, and strong enough to become redemptive.
– Amen
Carry This Prayer
Breathe in: Set Your tone within me…
Breathe out: …let me bring peace to this moment
For Today
I do not have to match the emotional temperature around me. I can bring a different presence.
