Scripture: Matthew 2:3
“When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.”
Reflection
The Magi arrived in Jerusalem asking a simple question: “Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?”
To most people, it was an exciting idea—a long-awaited prophecy perhaps fulfilled. But to Herod, it was a threat.
Herod had clawed his way to power, not by lineage, but by political maneuvering and brutal violence. He was known to execute anyone who posed a threat—including his own sons. So, the birth of a child—an innocent, helpless infant—sent shockwaves through his palace.
Because nothing threatens false power like true authority.
Herod’s fear was not religious—it was self-preservation. He heard “king” and saw the end of his control. And so, he lied. He schemed. And ultimately, he slaughtered.
Evil does not go quietly. It resists redemption. And even at Christmas, the darkness rages.
But Herod’s reaction proves something critical: the birth of Jesus matters. It shook kings. It upset systems. It revealed the deep insecurity of empires built on fear.
The child born in Bethlehem was not just a savior for souls. He was—and is—a King who reorders the world. And wherever Jesus reigns, false power trembles.
Centering Prayer
King of all kings,
Expose the fear in me that clings to control. Unseat the false thrones in me—my need to grasp, to guard, to dominate. Give me courage to let You reign, even if it undoes my world. You are the rightful ruler of my heart. – Amen
Practice for Today
Ask God to show you where fear or control is resisting the presence of Christ in your own heart. Surrender one area today where you’ve been trying to hold the throne.
Journaling Prompt
What does the story of Herod reveal about my own relationship with power, control, or fear?
Closing Blessing
Lay down your false crown of pride at the feet of the King.
Choose freedom over fear.
Let the reign of Christ come gently—but fully—into your life.
And let every lesser throne be cast down in His light.
Pray As You Go
Inhale: You are King…
Breath out: … and I surrender to You
