Scripture: Matthew 2:13
“Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, ‘Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt…’”
Reflection
God didn’t always send thunder and lightning. Sometimes He sent dreams.
To Joseph, divine direction came not by prophecy in a temple, but in the quiet mystery of sleep. It happened more than once. First, when he considered leaving Mary. Later, when Herod sought to kill Jesus. Again, when it was time to return from Egypt. And yet again, when danger still lurked in Judea.
God spoke—and Joseph listened.
Dreams don’t always make sense. They come without explanation, in images and impressions. But Joseph trusted the message. He obeyed in the dark. He rose in the middle of the night, packed up everything, and left for Egypt with a young wife and a small child, unsure of what was ahead but sure of who had spoken.
That’s faith.
We often want clarity before we act. Joseph didn’t wait. He moved on a whisper.
Sometimes God bypasses our intellect and speaks straight to the soul. Sometimes His guidance isn’t loud, but deeply personal. And sometimes the only way forward is to trust the dream He’s placed within you—even if no one else understands it.
The world was saved, in part, because one man listened when God spoke in the silence of sleep.
Centering Prayer
God who speaks in the night,
Soften my heart to hear You. Even in mystery, even when Your voice comes through dreams and inner stirrings, help me respond with trust. Guide my feet by whispers, and awaken me to the path You reveal in silence. – Amen
Practice for Today
Ask God to sanctify your imagination. Whether in dreams, prayer, or quiet thought, listen for a direction or reassurance that doesn’t come from logic but from love.
Journaling Prompt
What dream—literal or figurative—has God placed in my heart that I’ve been hesitant to trust?
Blessing for the Day
When reason fails, respond with faith.
When fear speaks, answer with trust.
May you have ears to hear even in silence,
And the courage to move when God speaks in the night.
Pray As You Go
Breathe in: Speak, Lord…
Breathe out: … Your servant is listening
