Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Reflection
Ambiguity is uncomfortable.
Most of us prefer clarity before we move forward. We want to understand what is happening, why it is happening, and where it will lead. When those answers remain out of reach, uncertainty can make us hesitant.
But life rarely unfolds with complete explanation.
This is why the proverb speaks so directly to the heart: “Don’t lean on your own understanding.”
Understanding is a gift. Wisdom encourages us to think carefully, seek insight, and learn from experience. Yet there are moments when our understanding reaches its limits. The situation remains unclear. The path ahead cannot be fully mapped.
In those moments, leaning on our own understanding becomes unstable.
Trust shifts our weight somewhere stronger.
To trust the Lord with all your heart does not mean abandoning thought or ignoring reality. It means recognizing that God sees further than we do. His wisdom extends beyond the small portion of the story we are able to see.
The proverb offers a simple posture for living in those moments: “In all your ways acknowledge him.”
Instead of waiting for perfect clarity, we continue walking while remaining attentive to God’s presence. We invite His wisdom into our decisions and remain open to His guidance.
As we live this way, we begin to see how God is working: “He will make your paths straight.”
A straight path does not mean an easy one. It means a directed one. Beneath the ambiguity we feel, God’s ordering wisdom is already shaping the way forward.
We may not see the full road ahead.
But we can trust the One who sees it completely.
A Prayer of Presence
Lord of subtle guidance,
When I cannot see the full path ahead, help me trust Your wisdom. In those times when your work in me seems quiet, help me to trust that You are creating a way forward. Teach me to walk faithfully even when understanding is incomplete.
– Amen
