Scripture: Mathew 6:20–21
“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Reflection
Jesus teaches that where we store our treasure reveals where we place our heart. Earthly treasures—wealth, possessions, achievements—are fragile. They fade, break, or may be stolen. Heavenly treasure endures because it is rooted in God’s eternal Kingdom.
We normally think of fasting as going without food. But, we can fast from our material possessions and focus on the value of our relationship with the One who created all. Focusing our attention from this world to our heavenly home brings us closer to God and more aware of our own dependence.
Heavenly treasure is not abstract. It is found in love expressed, faith lived out, prayers lifted, acts of service done in Christ’s name. These cannot be lost, for they are held in God’s eternal keeping.
The Spirit invites us to invest in what lasts. When we loosen our grip on possessions and tighten our grip on Christ, our hearts become anchored in heaven. Treasure follows desire, and desire shapes destiny. To lay up treasure in heaven is to set your heart where it truly belongs.
Centering Prayer
Father,
Help me focus my desires toward eternal treasure. When my faith and trust strays from you and on the things of this world, gently bring my attention back to you. Help me invest in what matters to You and loosen my grip on what fades away. – Amen.
Practice for Today
Choose one way to invest in eternal treasure —an act of kindness, a prayer, or generosity —and dedicate it to God alone.
