Heroes: The Owners of the Donkey and the Upper Room
Unknown disciples whose obedience frames Holy Week

Scripture: Luke 19:28–35; 22:7–13

“Go your way into the village on the other side, in which, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, which no man has ever sat upon. Untie it and bring it. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say to him: ‘The Lord needs it.’”

Reflection

Holy Week is filled with powerful moments—palms waving, crowds shouting, a table filled with bread and wine and heavy words. Behind those moments are two simple acts of obedience from people whose names we never learn.

As Jesus prepares to enter Jerusalem, He sends two disciples ahead with specific instructions: go into the village, you’ll find a young donkey tied there; untie it and bring it. If anyone asks, say, “The Lord needs it.” Someone has to be willing to let that animal go in spite of such a strange request.

Later in the week, when the Passover meal needs a place, Jesus again sends disciples ahead with directions: follow a man carrying a pitcher of water to a house, speak to the owner, and say, “The Teacher says to you, ‘Where is the guest room?’” The owner shows them a large upper room, furnished and ready.

A borrowed donkey. A borrowed room. No speeches, no spotlight. Just quiet yeses that hold up the central scenes of the gospel.

Your life is full of “donkeys and rooms”—resources, spaces, items on your calendar, abilities you may not think are special. Offering them to Jesus may feel small or even inconvenient. But when He sits on what you release, or when He shares a meal in the space you provide, ordinary things become holy.

You don’t have to know everything He will do with what you offer. You don’t even have to have your name remembered. You simply have to respond when He nudges your heart: “The Lord needs this. Will you let it go?”

Unassuming heroes are often those who say yes to unseen logistics that make visible grace possible.

Centering Prayer

Jesus,

You entered Jerusalem and shared Your last meal through simple acts of obedience. Thank You for the nameless disciples who gave their donkey and their room. Show me what I am holding that You are asking to use. Give me a willing heart to release it, trusting that anything in Your hands becomes part of a bigger story. – Amen

Practice for Today

Ask God, “What do You need from me today?” Be attentive to any nudge to lend an item, share a space, adjust your schedule, or release a possession for His purposes.

Journaling Prompt

What “donkey” or “upper room” might I be holding tightly that God is asking to use?

Closing Blessing

Loosen your grip on what you think you own.
Listen for the quiet whisper, “The Lord needs it.”
Let your ordinary belongings frame sacred moments.
Live in the open-handed trust of the man with the donkey and the room.

Pray as You Go

Breathe in: All I have is Yours…
Breathe out: … use it for Your purpose
