Hero: The Faithful Servant
Practicing hidden faithfulness when no one is watching
Scripture: Luke 12:35–48
“Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes.”
Reflection
Jesus paints a picture of a household where the master is away for a while. In his absence, a servant is left in charge to give others their portion of food at the right time. No one is standing over his shoulder. No one is giving daily evaluations. The temptation to slack off or take advantage is real.
Yet this servant stays awake, alert, and steady. He keeps doing what he was asked to do, especially in the ordinary rhythms—preparing meals, managing the house, caring for the people under his care. When the master unexpectedly returns and finds him faithfully at work, Jesus says, “Blessed is that servant.”
The blessing is not connected to spectacular achievements. It is tied to consistency.
Most of your life with God will be lived in times when He feels “away”—not in the sense that He has truly left you, but in the sense that you’re not seeing dramatic miracles or hearing constant confirmations. It is easy in those seasons to drift, to let prayer slide, to neglect the small acts of love and obedience that no one else tracks.
Yet in those hidden stretches, something deep is being formed in you. Character becomes muscle. Love becomes habit. Trust becomes reflex. You learn to serve because it is right, not because you are being watched or praised.
You may never get public recognition for the way you show up day after day: making breakfast, going to work, paying bills, helping a neighbor, showing kindness to a difficult person, being honest when it would be easier to cheat. But your Master sees.
Unassuming heroes are often those whose lives are a long obedience in the same direction, who keep the lamps burning when others grow tired of waiting.
Centering Prayer
Faithful Lord,
You see my daily routines and the places where I am tempted to give up. Thank You for this picture of a servant who stayed faithful when no one was watching. Strengthen my heart to be steady in the small things. Teach me to live as if You might walk through the door at any moment—with joy, not fear. – Amen
Practice for Today
Choose one ordinary responsibility you’re tempted to resent or neglect. Do it today with intentional love and excellence, as if Jesus Himself asked you for it.
Journaling Prompt
What “little things” in my life feel meaningless, and how might they look different if I truly believed Jesus sees them?
Closing Blessing
Dedicate your daily tasks as holy offerings.
Stay aware in the in-between times when faith feels quiet.
Live as if your Master will arrive any minute.
Walk in the steadfastness of the faithful servant.
Pray as You Go
Breathe in: I choose faithfulness...
Breathe out: … help me serve well
