Quiet intercession and excellent work as worship
Scripture: Colossians 3:23–24; Matthew 6:6
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will receive again for the wrong that he has done, and there is no partiality.
Reflection
Most workplaces don’t look or feel “spiritual.” They feel like emails and deadlines, meetings and metrics, projects and personalities. You might be one of the only believers in your office, your classroom, your shop, or your team. It can feel lonely, and sometimes you wonder if your faith even matters there.
Paul’s words to the Colossians land right in that setting: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men… you serve the Lord Christ.” Jesus is your real Boss, even when someone else signs your paycheck.
That means your spreadsheets, lesson plans, phone calls, orders, repairs, and reports can become offerings instead of just obligations. Doing your work with integrity, kindness, and diligence becomes a form of worship.
Layered into that is another secret: prayer.
Jesus invites you into a hidden room of conversation with the Father. “When you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret.” That door can be a literal space at home… but it can also be the quiet turning of your heart to God in the middle of your day.
You can walk into a meeting having already whispered, “Lord, give me wisdom and peace.” You can look at a difficult colleague and silently pray, “Father, bless them, soften them, and help me love them.” You can carry your workplace like an offering into the presence of God.
No one may ever know how often you pray for your coworkers by name. They may never realize that the peace in the room is partly the fruit of your unseen intercession. But the Father who sees in secret hears every word. He is at work in places where His name is never mentioned aloud.
Unassuming heroes are often people who type, teach, weld, manage while their hearts quietly lift their workplace to God.
Centering Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You are present with me in every task and conversation. Thank You for giving my work eternal value when I do it for You. Teach me to turn my thoughts into quiet prayers for the people I work with. Let my attitude, words, and effort reflect Your heart, even when no one else notices. – Amen
Practice for Today
Choose three people from your workplace and pray for them by name. As you work, quietly invite Jesus into your tasks and interactions.
Journaling Prompt
If Jesus sat beside me at work all day, how might I see my tasks and coworkers differently?
Closing Blessing
Enter your workplace as a quiet sanctuary.
Offer each task as worship and each conversation as an opportunity for grace.
Let secret prayers ripple through visible realities.
Walk in the hidden intercession of the coworker who prays in secret.
Pray as You Go
Breathe in: I work for You…
Breathe out: … turn my work into worship
This work is freely shared. If it nourishes your life with God, you’re welcome to help sustain it.
