Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: John 6:1–13
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”
Reflection
In a crowd of thousands, one boy’s lunch seems laughably small—five barley loaves and two fish. The disciples see the impossibility: “What are these among so many?” Yet someone notices the boy and his bundle, and Jesus takes what is offered.
We are not told the boy’s thoughts. Did he hesitate? Did he worry about going hungry? Or did he simply hand over what he had because someone asked? What we do know is this: he surrenders his small provision, and in Jesus’ hands it becomes more than enough. Everyone eats. Baskets of leftovers remain.
Surrender often begins with what feels insignificant: a small gift, a fragment of time, a simple obedience. We tend to minimize what we can offer because it doesn’t match the size of the need. But love in the wilderness is not about the size of the supply; it is about whose hands it rests in.
The season of Lent invites you to bring your “little”—your limited energy, your modest resources, your imperfect faith—and place it in Jesus’ care. He does the multiplying. You do the offering.
Today, don’t wait until you have more. Offer what you have now.
A Prayer of Presence
Jesus,
I bring You my small loaves and fish—my limited time, gifts, and courage. Take what I place in Your hands, bless it, break it, and use it to feed more than I can see. – Amen
Practice for Today
Identify one small act of service or generosity you can offer—a message of encouragement, a brief visit, a modest gift, a simple prayer. Offer it intentionally to Jesus and release any need to see the results.
Consider This...
Where have I been holding back because I believe what I have is “not enough” to matter?
Carry This Prayer With You
Breathe in: I offer my little to You...
Breathe out: ... to use for Your glory
