Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
The Pressure I Feel
Many voices reach for my attention and ask for the right to shape what I believe, fear, want, and become.
The Grace I Receive
The Spirit gives discernment so I can test every voice for truth and coherence with the mind of Christ.
Reflection
Not every voice that reaches us deserves to form us.
That may sound obvious until we consider how many voices we let in every day. News voices. Political voices. Religious voices. Marketing voices. Family voices. Social media voices. Productivity voices. Church-anxiety voices. The voice of inner fear. The voice of old wounds. The voice of tools that can generate confident words without wisdom.
Some voices are openly destructive. Others are mixed. They may contain facts, concern, energy, or even useful insight. But a voice can still shape us in a direction that does not reflect Christ.
John tells the beloved community not to believe every spirit. Test the spirits. That is not an invitation to suspicion as a way of life. It is an invitation to discernment as a form of love.
Discernment asks more than, Is this popular? Is this urgent? Is this impressive? Is this emotionally satisfying? Is this the view of my group? Discernment asks, Is this true? Is this coherent with the mind of Christ? Does this produce love, humility, clarity, patience, courage, and faithfulness? Or does it make me more afraid, reactive, proud, contemptuous, or easy to steer?
The future will bring more voices, not fewer. Some will be human. Some will be digital. Some will be institutional. Some will sound spiritual. Some will sound reasonable. Some will sound angry enough to feel true. Some will sound polished enough to seem wise.
The goal is not to hide from every input. We cannot live faithfully by pretending no voices exist. The goal is to stop being passive. We do not have to receive every voice into the inner room where formation happens.
A Christ-formed person learns to pause at the doorway of the soul. Before a voice gets to shape fear, desire, imagination, or response, it can be tested.
Does this voice tell the truth? Does it honor Christ? Does it make love more possible? Does it help me see people as neighbors rather than threats, tools, enemies, or obstacles? Does it help me obey God in the next faithful step?
The Spirit does not make us gullible. The Spirit makes us discerning. And discernment is one way love protects the future being formed within us.
Formation Practice
Choose one voice you regularly receive. It may be a news source, social media account, podcast, AI tool, family pattern, political voice, religious voice, or inner fear.
Ask: What does this voice keep forming in me? Does it move me toward the mind of Christ? Does it make me more truthful and more loving? Does it help me become calm and obedient, or captured and reactive?
You do not have to reject it immediately. Begin by testing it honestly. Discernment begins at the doorway.
Prayer of Formation
Spirit of truth,
Help me test the voices. Keep me from passive consumption. Keep me from suspicion that has forgotten love. Give me discernment that is clear, humble, and grounded in Christ. Show me which voices are forming fear and which voices are helping me become faithful. Guard the doorway of my soul.
