Today’s devotion reminds us that the inner life is tended rather than forced, making room for the Spirit to grow what God has planted within us.

Scripture: Proverbs 4:23
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.
The Pressure I Feel
I can become so skilled at reading everything around me that I stop noticing what is happening within me.
The Grace I Receive
I can pause long enough to hear the deeper movements within me and choose my response as a child of God rather than simply obeying the strongest impulse.
Reflection
A good gardener pays attention.
The gardener notices the soil. The amount of light. Whether a plant is dry. Whether it has become crowded. Whether something needs pruning. But the gardener does not stand over a seed and command it to grow.
The gardener tends the conditions in which growth can happen.
I think our inner life works much the same way. We cannot manufacture spiritual formation by force. We cannot order ourselves to become peaceful, wise, loving, or whole. But we can tend the interior conditions in which the Holy Spirit is already at work.
That requires attention. And many of us have become much better at reading external cues than internal ones. We notice the expression on someone’s face, the tone of an email, the mood in a room, the latest headline, the expectations of the people around us. Those things can matter. God can even speak through external events.
But the Holy Spirit is not merely another external signal competing for our attention. God is present within the believer.
Sometimes tending the inner life begins with stopping long enough to ask a question that interrupts automatic behavior: “Wait. What is driving me right now?”
Maybe the first answer is fear. Approval. Irritation. The need to prove something. A desire to withdraw. An old protective habit operating before conscious thought has caught up.
That realization does not require shame. It creates agency.
I can notice what my subconscious drive is telling me to do and then ask a second question: “What do I choose to do as a child of God?”
That pause is like tending soil. We are creating room for something deeper than impulse to grow.
Formation Practice
At least once today, interrupt an automatic reaction with two questions: “What is driving me right now?” and “What do I choose to do as a child of God?” Do not try to fix everything you discover. Tend it. Notice it, bring it into God’s presence, and make one deliberate choice.
Prayer of Formation
Holy Spirit,
Help me notice what is growing within me. Show me the fears, desires, habits, and impulses that quietly shape my reactions. Keep me from treating my inner life as something to control. Teach me to tend what You are growing with attention, honesty, patience, and grace.
– Amen
Carry This Prayer
Breathe in: Tend what You grow in me…
Breathe out: …lead me in what I choose
For Today
I cannot force spiritual growth, but I can tend the place where God is already at work.
