Take Up Your Cross Daily – Love in the Wilderness
A gentle reflection from Luke 9:23-27 on daily surrender
Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: Luke 9:23–27
He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.
Reflection
Jesus does not recruit followers with promises of ease. The cross is not jewelry here; it is an instrument of death.
Self-denial is not self-hatred. It is refusing to make the self the center of the universe. To carry a cross daily is to die, again and again, to the illusion that life is about my comfort, my glory, my agenda. In a world that urges us to “find yourself” and “express yourself,” Jesus calls us to lose ourselves in Him—and in doing so, to truly live.
This sounds harsh until we hear the promise beneath it: “Whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it.” The self we cling to is too small. The life we try to preserve shrivels in our tight grip. But when we surrender, we find ourselves drawn into a larger story, a deeper joy, a more lasting identity.
Love in the wilderness invites you to shoulder a cross not as punishment, but as a path. It is the way Jesus walked, and He does not send you down it alone. He walks before you and beside you.
Today, your “cross” may not be dramatic, but it will be real: a costly :yes,” a quiet “no,” a relinquished right.
A Prayer of Presence
Crucified and risen Lord,
Teach me the freedom of holy self-denial. Show me where I cling to my own way. Give me grace to take up my cross today and follow You into true life. – Amen
Practice for Today
Ask God to show you one specific way to “deny yourself” today—releasing a preference, absorbing a small offense, serving when you’d rather be served. Offer that act consciously as a way of following Jesus.
Consider This...
Where do I most resist Jesus’ call to “deny yourself and take up your cross”—and what am I afraid I will lose if I do?
Carry This Prayer With You
Breathe in: I deny myself…
Breathe out: … to follow You
