Today’s devotion shows us we depend on God’s power, not ours

Scripture: Ephesians 3:14–17
For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
The small ruler
I must appear strong and hold myself together.
The grace I receive
The Spirit strengthens the soul beneath my public life.
Reflection
You can appear strong while becoming depleted inside.
You keep functioning. You care for people, solve problems, complete responsibilities, and answer the familiar question with, “I’m fine.” The outer life remains capable, but the inner person spends increasing amounts of energy maintaining the appearance.
Paul bows in prayer and asks God to strengthen believers through the Spirit in the inner person.
The inner person is the soul beneath your public role. It is the center from which you interpret life—the place where identity, desire, courage, trust, and loving presence take form. When that center is depleted, outward competence can become a mask rather than an expression of genuine strength.
The course of this world tells us that appearing unaffected is strength. We learn to act as though problems do not touch us and the cares of life do not matter. Yet forced strength depends upon the limits of our own ability. It requires constant effort and expenditure.
The Spirit strengthens differently. Shame and pressure push from outside. God’s strength rises within as an invitation into more life than the world can give.
Christ dwells within you in places deeper than your conscious awareness. As relationship with Him grows, you may notice desires, insights, courage, and movements of compassion that you could not have produced by determination alone. His presence becomes a calm center beneath the demands around you.
This strength does not make you invulnerable. It makes you more able to remain loving, truthful, and present. You can acknowledge weariness without becoming defined by it. You can receive help without believing you have failed. You can set a boundary without abandoning love.
Think of a tree whose roots reach an underground river. The branches still feel the wind, and the leaves still endure the heat. The tree survives because life is being received beneath the surface.
You do not have to work hard at being powerful. The Spirit is strengthening the life beneath your visible life. You can rest in the strength of Christ within.
A prayer of presence
Father,
You see the soul beneath every role I carry. I release the facade of being untouched and self-sufficient. Christ is dwelling within me more deeply than I can perceive, and Your Spirit is strengthening what has grown tired. I receive the calm strength that helps me remain loving, truthful, and present.

A practice of grace
Sit with both feet on the floor and allow your shoulders to relax. Notice where you are bracing or maintaining an appearance of strength. Breathe slowly and say, “Christ strengthens me within.” Let receiving replace effort for one quiet minute.

Where am I spending energy appearing strong instead of allowing the Spirit to strengthen my inner person?
