Today’s devotion invites us to stand in God’s strength, not our own

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–11, 13–18
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil... Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and, having done all, to stand.
The small ruler
I have to be strong enough to withstand everything that comes against me.
The grace I receive
I stand in the strength God supplies, wearing the life He has already formed in me.
Reflection
Paul ends Ephesians with the language of battle.
But his repeated instruction is not attack.
It is stand.
He also makes something clear that is easily forgotten: people are not the enemy.
Our struggle is not against flesh and blood.
The struggle includes the forces that keep pulling us toward the old ways of living. Fear. Shame. Deception. Hostility. Domination. Separation. The belief that we have to produce our own strength.
We have spent thirty days loosening those old rulers.
Now Paul says to stay awake.
Spiritual warfare does not require us to become suspicious of everyone around us or to see every problem as a supernatural attack. It asks us to remain vigilant when the old self begins offering familiar answers again.
Look at the armor Paul gives us.
Truth. We have learned to recognize the false measures we once used.
Righteousness. Our identity is received in Christ.
Peace. Christ Himself is our peace.
Faith. We trust beyond what we can presently see.
Salvation. race has already acted.
The word of God. Truth continues shaping how we perceive life.
Prayer. We remain present to God.
This is not new equipment handed to us on the final day.
This is the life God has been forming throughout the journey.
The reader who began these devotions was tired from trying to find a place in God’s kingdom. There was a lot of searching. A lot of measuring. A lot of trying to become the person God might finally approve.
Now there can be less searching and more receiving.
God in you is the place.
Standing does not mean you will never become tired. Sometimes tiredness may simply reveal that you have begun trying to do everything in your own strength again.
You can notice that.
You can return.
You do not have to brace yourself against everything the world might do.
You know where you belong.
You know what holds you.
You know where your strength comes from.
You do not need another ruler.
Grace has given you a place to stand.
Love has taught you how to walk.
Now stand in the strength God gives.
A prayer of presence
God,
I know where I belong. I know what holds me. I confess how easily I return to my own strength when I become afraid or tired. Everything You have been forming within me is still here. Let truth, peace, faith, grace, and prayer keep me awake to Your presence. I stand with Christ.

A practice of grace
Stand quietly for a moment with both feet firmly on the floor. Feel the ground beneath you. Name one thing you are facing and say, “I do not have to brace against this alone. I stand in the strength God gives.”
