Scripture: Matthew 6:24
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.”
Reflection
Jesus warns that we cannot serve both God and Mammon. Mammon is more than money—it is the spirit of possession, the illusion that wealth can secure life. To serve Mammon is to live enslaved to greed and worry.
Loyalty cannot be divided. In Exodus 20:5 God tells us that He is a “jealous” God. This word means to be eager in pursuing something important. God pursues you and desires your full attention because He knows that we can only be fully devoted when our loyalty isn’t divided.
Serving God alone leads to freedom. When God is our Master, possessions become tools, not tyrants. Life becomes centered in trust rather than fear. The Spirit empowers us to choose rightly, breaking the grip of false masters and anchoring us in God’s Kingdom.
Everyday choices reveal our allegiance. Each decision asks: Who is my master here? When we serve God first, everything else finds its place. We, then, find our place in God’s presence, fully committed, fully protected, fully alive.
Centering Prayer
Lord,
I choose You alone as my Master. When the things of this world distract me from You, help me to know that all that is valuable come from You. Let my life be guided by Your Kingdom and not by the desire for material possessions. – Amen.
Practice for Today
Notice where money or possessions create stress in your life. Offer that area to God and ask Him to rule there instead.
