Today’s devotion invites us to be open continually to God’s love that roots us in grace

Scripture: Ephesians 3:17–21
That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory.

My security depends on strength, approval, usefulness, or understanding.
The grace I receive
I am rooted in love and continually opened to the fullness of God.
Reflection
Every life sends roots somewhere.
We may root ourselves in approval, responsibility, achievement, being needed, or avoiding failure. These sources can feel stabilizing for a time, yet they remain outside us. Approval can be withdrawn. Achievement must be repeated. Usefulness changes. Understanding reaches its limit.
External affirmation creates shallow roots when we depend upon it to tell us that we are enough. We perform to please, monitor how others respond, and fear what will happen when we can no longer provide what made us valuable.
Paul prays for something deeper: that we would be rooted and grounded in love.
Love is not the reward waiting at the end of successful spiritual growth. Love is the soil from which growth begins. It is the cause. The life that flows from love is the fruit.
Paul also prays that we will know a love that surpasses knowledge. This is more than intellectual comprehension. Lived knowing appears when you feel safe enough to rest, trust God within uncertainty, recognize His presence in ordinary moments, and become more loving without forcing yourself to change.
A small ruler cannot measure this love. The measures of the world compare God’s grace with human approval, effort, or affection. They cannot reach the width, length, height, and depth of what Christ gives.
Paul’s language of fullness does not describe spiritual perfection or a permanently elevated emotional state. We live in an ongoing movement of being filled. As grace expands us, we become increasingly available to the life and love of God. Our capacity to receive and express His presence grows.
God does not erase your personality, humanity, or limitations. You are His workmanship. Even what you consider a limitation may become a place where humility opens you to a power beyond your own.
The tree rooted beside an underground river does not manufacture its life. It receives what flows beneath the surface. Weather changes. Seasons come. The hidden source remains.
God is able to do beyond what you ask or imagine because His work is not restricted to the boundary of your understanding. His power is already active within you.
You do not have to hold yourself together. You are rooted in love, strengthened from within, and continually being filled with the life of God.
A prayer of presence
God of immeasurable love,
I have sent roots into approval, usefulness, achievement, and understanding. Those sources cannot hold the whole weight of my life. Your love reaches deeper than my knowledge and remains beneath every changing season. Root me in what cannot be taken away, and keep expanding my capacity to receive Your fullness.

A practice of grace
Place both feet firmly on the floor and imagine roots extending beneath you into an underground river of God’s love. With each slow breath, release one external measure you have depended upon. Rest for a moment in the truth that your life is being filled from a deeper source.
