Ephesians 3:14–21
A tree can look healthy for a season above the ground.
The leaves may be green. The branches may stretch outward. From a distance, everything can seem strong and alive.
But if the roots are shallow, the first hard storm reveals the problem.
The tree does not fall because it had no leaves. It falls because it did not have enough depth.
That happens in the spiritual life too.
A person can look strong on the outside and feel weak within. A person can stay busy, serve faithfully, say the right words, keep showing up, and still feel thin inside. Unsupported. Exhausted beneath the activity. Reactive under pressure. Dependent on approval to feel secure.
Many believers try to grow taller before they grow deeper.
Paul prays in the opposite direction.
“…that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love…”
— Ephesians 3:16–17
The love of Christ is not only something we believe. It becomes the root system that holds us, strengthens us, and fills us with the life of God.
In This Episode
In TBU 101 — Rooted Beyond Measure, we continue the Love Beyond Measure journey through Ephesians by listening to Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14–21.
In Ephesians 2, Paul showed us that Christ brings down the wall and builds a dwelling place for God. The dead are made alive. The far-off are brought near. The divided are made one household.
Now, in Ephesians 3, Paul bows in prayer for the inner life of the people living inside that household.
Paul prays that believers would be:
Strengthened in the inner person
Indwelt by Christ through faith
Rooted and grounded in love
Able to comprehend Christ’s love with all the saints
Filled with all the fullness of God
This is not surface spirituality.
This is rooted strength.
The Heart of the Episode
Paul does not pray that the church would become more impressive, more successful, or more powerful in the way the world defines power.
He prays for depth.
He prays that the Spirit would strengthen the inner person.
The inner person is the activity of the soul that may not be communicated to the world and may not even be fully understood by ourselves.
It is the place where fear rises before words form.
It is where shame can hide beneath competence.
It is where exhaustion can live under a full calendar.
It is where we decide, often without realizing it, whether we are safe, loved, wanted, capable, or alone.
Inner strength is the Spirit-formed capacity to remain alive to God when pressure, fear, shame, or grief tries to collapse the soul.
That kind of strength does not come from appearing impressive.
It comes from the Spirit of God strengthening the hidden life.
Christ Dwelling in the Heart
Paul also prays:
“…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith…”
— Ephesians 3:17
This is more than familiar religious language.
Christ dwelling in the heart is the real and personal presence of Christ interacting with the inner person.
The word “dwell” carries the sense of settling down, making a home, becoming at home within us.
Paul is not praying for Christ to visit the heart as a temporary guest.
He is praying that Christ would be at home there.
That raises an important question:
Where is Christ still treated like a visitor in us?
Old shame may resist Him. Fear may keep some rooms closed. Control may say, “You can come this far, but not farther.” Resentment, self-protection, and hidden grief can all become places in the heart where we hesitate to welcome His presence.
Faith opens the heart.
Faith means we trust Christ enough to let Him dwell where we have been afraid to let Him enter.
Rooted and Grounded in Love
Paul’s central image is this:
“…being rooted and grounded in love…”
— Ephesians 3:17
Rooted and grounded.
A tree has roots.
A building has a foundation.
Both speak of depth. Both speak of stability. Both speak of what holds when pressure comes.
Love is not the decoration on the Christian life. Love is the root system and foundation that make Christian life possible.
When people are rooted in fear, fear tells them what to protect, who to distrust, when to react, and how to survive.
When people are grounded in performance, they spend their lives proving themselves without ever feeling adequate.
When people are rooted in approval, they become dependent on the shifting responses of others.
When people are rooted in resentment, pain becomes the organizing force of the soul.
Paul prays for something better.
Rooted and grounded in love.
Love Beyond Measure is not simply the announcement that God loves us. It is the process by which God’s love becomes the deep structure of the soul.
Knowing the Love That Surpasses Knowledge
Paul prays that believers would:
“…know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge…”
— Ephesians 3:19
That sounds almost contradictory.
How can we know something that surpasses knowledge?
Paul is not against knowledge. He is praying for a kind of knowing that knowledge alone cannot contain.
Facts matter. Doctrine matters. Understanding matters.
But knowing facts is not the same as living in the meaning of those facts.
There is a difference between seeing a mountain from a distance and standing in the mountain air.
One is observation.
The other is participation.
The love of Christ can be truly known, but never exhausted.
There will always be more.
More depth.
More healing.
More participation.
More transformation.
More love to receive than the soul has yet understood.
Bible by Design Moment
The Root System of Love
The movement of this passage is simple and beautiful.
The Father names the family.
The Spirit strengthens the inner person.
Christ dwells in the heart.
Love roots and grounds the soul.
God fills His people with fullness.
The visual anchor is a tree.
Above the ground, we see branches, leaves, fruit, and visible life. But beneath the ground, the roots are drawing from the soil, anchoring the tree, and making growth possible.
Paul is praying for the root system.
He is praying that the inner life of God’s people would be strong enough to hold the love of Christ.
The bottom line is this:
The love of Christ can be truly known, but never exhausted.
Why This Matters
This matters because believers often focus on outward strength while neglecting inward formation.
We may assume the world has the real power because it is louder, faster, more visible, and more demanding.
But Paul prays for power through the Spirit in the inner person.
This matters for ministry fatigue.
Fatigue often comes from trying to do too much of the wrong thing while neglecting the deeper place where God wants to strengthen us.
This matters for grief.
Grief is a natural human response to loss. God does not ask us to pretend grief is not real. He strengthens the inner person so grief does not collapse the soul.
This matters for people who know God loves them intellectually but struggle to receive that love emotionally.
Paul moves us from knowing about love to relationship with love.
Christ dwells in the heart.
The Spirit strengthens the inner person.
Love becomes the root system.
A soul that is not rooted in love will eventually root itself in fear, approval, control, resentment, or performance.
Paul prays for a better root.
A Seed for The Formed Future
This Love Beyond Measure series will eventually lead us toward The Formed Future.
Ephesians 3 gives us a quiet but important seed.
The formed future will require people whose inner lives are stronger than the pressures around them.
A person rooted in fear can be manipulated by fear.
A person rooted in approval can be manipulated by approval.
A person rooted in outrage can be manipulated by outrage.
But a person rooted and grounded in love has a different kind of stability.
The future will test what we are rooted in.
Reflection Questions
Where do you look strong outwardly but feel weak within?
What has been functioning as your root system lately: fear, approval, control, resentment, performance, or love?
Where does Christ still feel like a visitor rather than at home in your heart?
What closed room of the heart might Christ be inviting you to open?
How have you experienced the love of Christ through “all the saints”?
What would it mean to stop trying to grow taller before growing deeper?
Where do you need the Spirit to strengthen your inner person this week?
Prayer of Presence
Father, strengthen me through Your Spirit living within me.
Let Christ dwell deeply in my heart through faith.
Where fear, approval, or performance have become my roots, ground me again in love.
Help me know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.
Fill me with the fullness of Your life.
Amen.
