Scripture: Matthew 6:6
“But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
Reflection
Prayer is not a performance. Jesus warns against praying to impress others and invites us instead into the quiet space where only God sees. Secret prayer deepens intimacy—it strips away pretense and reveals a heart truly seeking the Father.
The “inner room” may be a literal space, but it also points to the inner sanctuary of the soul. There, the Spirit meets us in honesty. When we pray in secret we also pray in silence, giving the soul the space to become more aware of God’s presence. Words may be few, but awareness is everything.
Secret prayer is an opportunity to go beyond telling God what you want and need. Secret Prayer is an opportunity to be in His presence quietly, softly… intimately. Being with God without the need to “say something” is a blessing most believers have not experienced.
Public prayer has its place, but secret prayer shapes the soul. It becomes the well from which all public faithfulness flows. In stillness, trust deepens, and relationship matures. God rewards such prayer not with applause but with His nearness.
Centering Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Draw me into the quiet place where Your Spirit dwells. Teach me to pray with honesty, with calmness of spirit, and without the need to impress or perform. Help me to delight in Your presence alone. – Amen.
Practice for Today
Set aside five minutes in complete solitude. Pray simply, without script or show, and rest in the awareness that the Father sees you.
Journaling Prompt
How do I approach prayer differently when no one else is watching?
How does the quality of prayer change when I take time to listen?
Blessing for the Day
Enter the inner room with boldness.
Pray in the secret of God’s presence.
Let your soul rest in His nearness so that
you may live today in quiet intimacy with God.
Pray as You Go
Breathe in: Praying in secret…
Breath out: ... seen by You
