Scripture: Ephesians 2:15–18
He made peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility through it. He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near. For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

In Christ, I belong to a new humanity formed by love.
Reflection
The categories of us and them can offer a quick sense of security.
When people feel incomplete or uncertain, they often gather with others who share the same fears, convictions, or wounds. The group provides belonging, but it may also create an outsider. Superiority becomes a way of hiding insecurity.
Race, ethnicity, political party, denomination, social status, moral comparison, and even the distinction between strong and struggling believers can become walls. These identities may describe real differences, but they were never meant to carry the full weight of who we are.
Paul says Christ creates one new humanity. He does not merely persuade opposing groups to tolerate each other. He forms something new through the cross.
New humanity does not mean sameness. God does not erase culture, personality, history, conviction, or distinct experience. We remain different, but we are bound by a love deeper than the differences that once gave hostility its power.
Tolerance can keep people at a polite distance. Love moves closer. It creates mutual respect, awakens a desire to understand, and seeks the good of the other without trying to dominate them.
Hostility is the energy of separateness. It tells us that another person must remain beneath, beyond, or against us so we can feel whole. Yet diminishing someone else cannot heal what feels incomplete within us. It only deepens the division.
Christ gives us an identity secure enough to release the need for an enemy. His love allows strength to rise from within the soul and move outward into the world. We no longer need constant validation from a group that proves its worth by rejecting another group.
This does not mean ignoring real injustice or pretending every belief is harmless. Love can name what wounds and oppose what dehumanizes. But it refuses to surrender the humanity of the person on the other side.
God’s new humanity is formed when we begin to see others through the love that brought us near. We become curious instead of contemptuous, humble instead of superior, and willing to seek the good of people whose lives are different from ours.
In Christ, difference remains. Hostility does not have to.
A prayer of presence
God of reconciliation,
You have given me an identity deeper than every dividing label. I confess the ways insecurity has tempted me to seek belonging through superiority or exclusion. Your love holds difference without hostility. Form me within Your new humanity and teach me to see others with humility, courage, and desire for their good.
– Amen
A practice of grace
Notice one label you use to reduce a person or group to “them.” Without denying real differences or harm, replace the label with this truth: “This is a person God desires to draw near.” Allow that sentence to soften how you see them.
