Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: John 15:11
I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.
Reflection
Joy is not a mood we force ourselves to feel.
It is not emotional brightness on demand. It is not the denial of sorrow, grief, anxiety, pressure, or pain. Joy is deeper than cheerfulness. It rises from the life of God within us as our souls are searched, healed, reoriented, and brought into harmony with Him.
Jesus said, “I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.”
He did not say this because His disciples were about to live easy lives. He said it as He was preparing them for love, surrender, obedience, hardship, and abiding. His joy was not dependent on pleasant circumstances. His joy came from perfect union with the Father. His inner life was whole. His love, will, desire, words, actions, and trust moved together.
That is where joy grows.
Joy is the fruit of an aligned soul.
When the different parts of us are struggling against each other, joy becomes hard to sense. Anxiety pulls one way. Fear pulls another. Worry tightens the body. Shame narrows the mind. Stress fills the inner room with noise. The soul becomes divided, and we begin to believe joy is gone.
But joy is not gone.
Often, we are simply focused on the threat.
This is part of being human. When we feel under pressure, our attention narrows. We look at the problem, the danger, the loss, the conflict, the uncertainty, the pain. This is an ancient survival response. The mind searches for what might hurt us. The body prepares to protect us. The soul begins to live as if the threat is the truest thing in the room.
But spiritual maturity makes space between threat and response.
In that space, we learn to invite God into what feels overwhelming. We do not pretend the threat is imaginary. We do not shame ourselves for feeling afraid. We simply pause long enough to remember that the problem is not the only reality. God is present too.
And when God’s presence begins to relieve the intensity of the threat, perception widens.
We notice the breath after tension releases.
The face of someone we love.
A memory that still blesses us.
The comfort of being understood.
The quiet awareness that God is still near.
These moments do not create joy by themselves. They become shining places where joy can be acknowledged because God is already at work within us.
This is why joy cannot be reduced to a choice, even though choice matters. Many people have felt defeated because they could not “find” joy. They have believed their negative feelings were stronger than they were. They have told themselves, “This is just the way I am,” or “I cannot help feeling this way.”
But in Christ, you are not powerless before your feelings.
You belong to God. His Spirit is within you. His joy is not merely an emotion you generate on occasion. It is His faithful presence strengthening you from the inside.
A life of joy is a gift of God.
So today, do not try to manufacture joy. Let go of the pressure to create it. Let God keep searching, healing, and reorienting your soul. Let His peace quiet the inner struggle. Let His presence widen your vision.
Joy is not your assignment.
It is Christ’s life remaining in you.
Prayer of Presence
Christ Jesus,
Let Your joy remain in me. Not as a feeling I have to force, not as a mask over sorrow, and not as pressure to appear more spiritual than I am. Let Your joy become strength within me. When my attention narrows around the threat, help me pause long enough to remember You are near. Widen my vision. Reorient my soul. Teach me to receive the joy that comes from life with You.
– Amen
Carry This Prayer With You
Breathe in: Your joy remains in me...
Breathe out: … My soul rests in You
You are not failing because joy feels distant. God is not asking you to pretend.
Joy grows as your soul becomes more deeply held, healed, and aligned in Christ. Even a trace of peace can be the beginning of fullness.
