Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: Luke 1:26–38
Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Reflection
Mary’s life is set: marriage, children, predictability. She is a young woman in a small town, with limited choices already. Then, the angel appears. And yet Gabriel’s message asks for a deeper surrender. The angel asks her to give up control of her body, her reputation, and her future plans—all destine to be folded into God’s strange and holy story.
Her question is honest: “How can this be?” God’s call does not insult her intelligence. But once she understands that this will be the Spirit’s work, she doesn’t bargain for better terms. She answers with a simple, world-shifting yes: “Behold, the servant of the Lord; be it to me according to your word.”
Surrender is not passive resignation. It is active consent. Mary is not dragged into God’s will; she agrees to it. She becomes the place where heaven’s word takes on human flesh.
The season of Lent invites us into Mary’s posture. We may not receive angelic visitations, but we do hear quieter nudges: forgive, release, obey, risk, stay, go. Our first reflex is often self-protection: What will this cost me? How will this look? Mary’s story reminds us that the deepest favor often comes wrapped in costly obedience.
Love in the wilderness asks: will you trust My word enough to say yes, even when you don’t see the whole path?
A Prayer of Presence
Lord,
Let Mary’s words become my own. I bring You my questions and my fears, yet I choose to stand as Your servant. Let it be to me according to Your word, for Your will is wiser than my plans. – Amen
Practice for Today
Name one small area where you sense God nudging you but you’ve been hesitating. Write a simple “let it be” prayer about that specific area and speak it aloud at least once today.
