Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25
Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly. But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Reflection
Joseph’s story begins with disappointment. The woman he is pledged to marry is pregnant—and he knows he is not the father. As a righteous man, he decides on a quiet divorce, trying to balance obedience to the law with compassion for Mary. It is the most reasonable plan he can see.
Then God interrupts his sleep. “Don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife,” the angel says, because this is a work of supernatural proportions and not human failure. Joseph is asked to trade the safety of his carefully crafted plan for a life that will be misunderstood. He will bear the cost of scandal to shelter the Savior.
When he wakes up, he does what the angel commanded. No speeches. No songs. Just obedience. He marries Mary. He names the child Jesus. He adjusts his life around a story conceived by God, not by him.
Surrender often looks like this: unseen faithfulness in the background. We may never stand in a spotlight, but we are invited to carry the weight of choices that protect others and honor God, even when people misunderstand.
Love in the wilderness may call you, like Joseph, to stand by someone whose story doesn’t make sense yet—and to obey God quietly when it would be easier to walk away.
A Prayer of Presence
God of hidden faithfulness,
Teach me Joseph’s kind of courage. When obedience is costly and misunderstood, steady my heart to follow Your voice more than the opinions around me. – Amen
Practice for Today
Identify one person in your life who may be “misunderstood” or quietly bearing a heavy load. Reach out with a simple act of support—listening, encouragement, or practical help—without needing recognition.
Consider This...
Where might God be inviting me to a quiet obedience that won’t be celebrated publicly but matters deeply to Him?
Carry This Prayer With You
Breathe in: Make me faithful...
Breathe out: ... when my plans are not Yours
