Scripture: Matthew 5:17
“Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill.”
Reflection
When Jesus declared that He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it, He was setting the foundation for everything that follows in the Sermon on the Mount. The Law and the Prophets carried God’s wisdom, but they were incomplete apart from Him. Their sacrifices, commands, and promises were signposts pointing to the One who would embody them perfectly.
Fulfillment means that Jesus not only kept the Law but also revealed its true depth. Where the Law taught outward obedience, He revealed the inward posture of the heart. Where the Prophets spoke of justice and mercy, He lived them in flesh and blood. In Him, the Scriptures find their completion, not by erasing what came before, but by filling it with greater glory.
For us, this changes everything. Righteousness is no longer about rule-keeping but about relationship. We live not by our own effort but by the Spirit of Christ dwelling within us. The same Kingdom life that Jesus fulfilled is now offered to us—not as a burden but as a gift. To follow Him is to walk in the fullness of God’s promises.
Prayer
Lord Jesus…
You are the fulfillment of every promise of God. Thank You for completing what I could never achieve. Teach me to live not by striving but by trusting Your Spirit within me. Let my life reflect the fullness of Your Kingdom. – Amen.
