Hope That Argues with Jesus – Love in the Wilderness
A devotion on Mark 7:24-30 on insistent faith
Here is a devotion to start your day!

Scripture: Mark 7:24–30
But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
Reflection
A Gentile mother with a tormented daughter hears that Jesus is nearby. She falls at His feet and begs Him to cast the demon out. Jesus’ response sounds harsh: “Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
Most of us would turn away in hurt or anger. She doesn’t. She answers, “Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” She neither denies His mission to Israel nor retreats from her hope. She holds onto both reverence and desperation.
Jesus marvels at her reply. He does not scold her for arguing; He honors her faith and grants her request. Her bold persistence draws out a mercy that hints at the wider reach of His kingdom.
Some hopes wrestle with God. We bring Him what we’ve been taught, what we’ve experienced, and what we long for, and we stay in the tension. Lent can be a season for this kind of honest, respectful argument—where we say, “Yes, Lord… and still I ask.”
Love in the wilderness is not fragile. It can handle your pushback and your persistence.
A Prayer of Presence
Lord Jesus,
Sometimes Your ways confuse me. Give me faith like this mother—humble, persistent, unafraid to keep asking. Meet me in the tension and let Your mercy reach my deepest need. – Amen
Practice for Today
Bring one confusing or disappointing area of your life into prayer. Instead of censoring yourself, tell Jesus exactly how you feel and what you desire. Then sit in silence, simply staying in His presence.
Consider This...
Where am I afraid to “argue” or wrestle with God—and what might happen if I brought my full honesty into His presence?
Carry This Prayer With You
Breathe in: I trust You enough…
Breathe out: … to keep asking
