Today’s devotion reminds us that confidence does not come from being stronger than everything around us, but from knowing who lives within us.

Scripture: 1 John 4:4
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
The Pressure I Feel
I can give too much authority to people, systems, opinions, or cultural expectations simply because they have influence over something happening around me.
The Grace I Receive
The God who lives within me is stronger, wiser, and more trustworthy than any outside voice. I can listen without surrendering my center.
Reflection
Sometimes the people evaluating us do not know what they do not know.
They may be intelligent. They may be sincere. They may even have legitimate authority over a policy, a performance review, a schedule, or a decision that affects us. But authority over part of our circumstances is not the same thing as authority over our soul.
I have felt that tension in ministry within a corporate environment. Someone can have a direct say in how my performance as an employee is assessed while having very little understanding of what good chaplaincy actually requires. They can know metrics, procedures, or organizational expectations and still not know what happens in a room when a frightened family needs presence more than productivity.
That can feel externally powerful. A person or system may have real influence over what happens next. But 1 John gives us another center: “greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.” That is not a boast that I am better than someone else. It is not “I am a winner and you are not.” It is a calm confidence that the God who lives in me is greater, stronger, and wiser than anything outside of God’s influence within me.
This kind of confidence does not make us unteachable. It actually makes us more teachable because we do not have to defend ourselves against every opinion. We can listen carefully, receive what is true, make changes when change is needed, and still refuse to give another person more spiritual authority than belongs to them.
Confidence rooted in ego depends on my ability to prove myself, control the situation, or get the outcome I want. Confidence rooted in God can remain steady even when I am outmatched externally. I may not control the evaluation. I may not control the policy. I may not control what someone thinks of me.
But I can remember who lives within me. I can listen for the Spirit beneath the noise. I can choose not to let an outside opinion become an inside verdict.
Formation Practice
Notice one outside voice that has been carrying too much authority in you—an opinion, expectation, cultural norm, or institutional message. Ask: What part of this is actually mine to receive? What does not match what God is forming in me? Listen carefully, make any needed adjustment, and release the rest.
Prayer of Formation
God,
Kep me teachable without making me dependent on every outside opinion. Give me the humility to receive truth and the steadiness to release what does not belong. Remind me that Your presence within me is wiser and stronger than the voices pressing around me. Let my confidence rest in You.
– Amen
Carry This Prayer
Breathe in: Greater is the One within me…
Breathe out: …I do not fear what is around me
For Today
Outside voices may influence my circumstances, but they do not get to define my center.
