Grace That Teaches – Held in Grace
A gentle reflection on Titus 2:11-12 about grace that instructs and informs us
Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: Titus 2:11–12
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age…
Reflection
For many, growth has been shaped by rules.
Clear expectations. Defined boundaries. A sense that if something is missed or done incorrectly, something shifts in the relationship.
Over time, this can create a quiet pressure. A feeling of needing to stay alert—of not quite trusting that everything is steady.
And, when grace is introduced, it is sometimes misunderstood.
For some, it becomes permission to drift. If grace covers everything, then maybe it doesn’t matter how life is lived.
But that is not what grace does.
“The grace of God… instructs us.” Grace is not passive. It is not indifferent to how you live.
It teaches.
Not through pressure. Not through fear. Through invitation.
Rules focus on behavior—what must be done or avoided. Grace reaches deeper. It forms who you are becoming.
This is why change begins to feel different.
You are being guided, not forced.
There is a growing sense of alignment—not just with God, but within yourself. A coherence that doesn’t come from trying harder, but from listening more closely.
The belief that change only happens through discipline and pressure begins to loosen.
Because grace is already at work.
Instruction is being offered—not demanded.
You are not being pushed into growth. You are being invited into it.
And as you begin to receive that instruction, you sense a change. The need to figure everything out begins to quiet. The constant effort to figure out what to do gives way to a more attentive awareness.
Guidance begins to surface. Not through force—but through presence.
Grace is not only what holds you.
It is what forms you.
Prayer of Presence
God of gentle guidance,
You do not force what You are forming. Quiet the noise of pressure and the need to control. Open space in me for listening. Let Your grace teach what is true, and shape what is becoming in me. – Amen
