Scripture: Ephesians 3:10–13
To the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
The small ruler
God’s wisdom appears mainly through impressive people and visible success.
The grace I receive
God reveals His wisdom through imperfect people formed together by grace.
Reflection
The world often calls a person wise when they know how to get the result they want.
Wisdom becomes strategy: how to gain influence, protect a position, win an argument, or make other people cooperate. Strength is measured by control and visible success.
Paul describes a wisdom the world cannot manufacture. God’s manifold wisdom becomes visible through the church.
Manifold wisdom has many expressions, colors, and dimensions. It is larger than a single person’s insight. It appears when former strangers become family, when power is expressed through service, when wounded people learn to remain present, and when distinct people are bound together by love rather than forced into sameness.
A reconciled community reveals something beyond human strategy. The world may not understand the source of its love and peace, yet it recognizes that such a life is desirable. People who were trained to compete begin to serve. Those who once protected themselves begin to listen. Difference remains, but hostility no longer decides the relationship.
The church has not always embodied this wisdom. Some believers continue to live according to what Paul calls the course of this world. Control, status, fear, exclusion, and self-protection can enter religious communities and cause deep harm.
Church hurt should never be explained away as though the pain does not matter. It reveals the painful gap between God’s intention and the ways people sometimes choose worldly power over grace.
Yet human failure does not erase God’s intention. God is still forming a people whose shared life displays what grace can do.
Imperfect people can reveal divine wisdom when they stop pretending to possess perfect strength. When we admit our limits, receive forgiveness, repair what we have harmed, and allow God to work through weakness, His power becomes more visible than our image management.
God’s wisdom is not displayed by a church that appears flawless. It is displayed by people who keep returning to grace and allow love to form a life the world could never create on its own.
A prayer of presence
God of many-sided wisdom, I grieve the ways worldly power has wounded people within Your church. I also remember Your purpose: to form former strangers into a people of grace. Free me from the need to appear impressive or right. Let humility, repair, service, and love make Your wisdom visible through us.
A practice of grace
Think of one person whose background, perspective, or experience differs from yours. Name one way their presence could expand your understanding of God’s grace. Hold them before God with openness rather than evaluation.
