Scripture: Matthew 5:31-32

“It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’ but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress.”

Reflection

In Jesus’ day, divorce could be as casual as a husband writing a note of dismissal. Women were often left vulnerable and abandoned without protection. Jesus confronted this injustice, proclaiming a higher standard: marriage is covenant, not convenience—committed, not casual. Marriage is a union meant to reflect God’s faithfulness.

Faithfulness in marriage points beyond human commitment to divine love. The covenant between husband and wife mirrors the covenant between Christ and His people —a love that endures, forgives, and holds fast.

Jesus’ words are strong because His vision for love is strong: it is meant to be secure, dignifying, and lasting. But his words are also confrontational. The option to end a marriage with a note comes from the Old Testament Law itself. He raises the standard.

Through the Spirit, covenant love becomes possible. Even in brokenness, He can restore what is damaged and strengthen what feels weak. In a culture of disposable relationships, faithfulness becomes a radical witness to the Kingdom—a declaration that love is not a temporary contract but a reflection of God’s eternal promise.

Centering Prayer

God of covenant,

Strengthen the marriages around me with Your faithfulness. Teach me loyalty, patience, and love that endures beyond my own abilities. May my relationships reflect the steadfast love of Christ. Amen.

Practice for Today

If you are married, do one small act today that communicates faithfulness—a word, a gesture, a prayer. If you are single, pray for marriages you know, that they would be marked by covenant love.

Journaling Prompt

Where have I seen faithfulness modeled in relationships?
How does God’s steadfast love shape the way I view covenant commitments?

Blessing for the Day

Honor the covenant of love.
Reflect the faithfulness of Christ.
Be steadfast in word and deed.
Walk today in the strength of God’s promise.

Pray as You Go

Breathe in: Faithful God…
Breath out: … faithful love
