Dropping the Religious Masks

Day 12 – Still, Here... Love in the Wilderness

Scripture: Luke 18:9–14

In today’s episode, we sit with one of Jesus’ most unsettling parables—the story of a Pharisee and a tax collector who go to the temple to pray.

One stands tall, confident in his moral résumé. The other stands far off, unable to lift his eyes, whispering a simple plea: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

Jesus’ conclusion turns expectations upside down. It is not the polished prayer that carries weight, but the honest one.

This episode invites us to notice the subtle religious masks we wear—the ways we perform competence, certainty, or spiritual strength. Lent is not about proving ourselves worthy. It is about laying down what blocks grace.

God is not impressed by performance.
He is drawn to honesty.

Today, prayer becomes the place where striving stops and mercy begins.

In This Episode

  • Why Jesus’ verdict in Luke 18 is more radical than it first appears

  • The difference between praying to perform and praying to receive

  • How confession opens space for grace rather than earning it

  • A gentle breath prayer to carry humility into your day

A Prayer of Presence

Merciful God,
I come with empty hands. Strip away my need to impress You or others. Teach me to pray simply and honestly, trusting that Your mercy is enough for me. Amen.

Carry This Prayer With You

Breathe in: Have mercy on me…
Breathe out: … give me a humble heart

Stillness is not weakness.
Honesty is not failure.
Mercy is not scarce.

Until next time:
Stay steady.
Stay open.
Stay present.

You are still… here.
