Scripture: Romans 8:26
“In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.”
Reflection
There are times when words just won’t come. You sit in silence, maybe trying to pray, maybe too numb to even try. The ache is too deep and the pain too raw. It’s easy to feel like you’re failing at faith because your lips are still and your heart feels empty.
But Scripture assures us: even this is prayer.
Romans 8:26 tells us that when we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit steps in and carries our cries. Not our polished, theological petitions. Not even our coherent thoughts. Just groanings. Wordless anguish. Breathless sorrow.
God doesn’t need you to perform. He’s not keeping score of how often you pray or how well. He already knows your pain. And the Spirit—God’s very presence within you—is praying on your behalf in language deeper than words.
So, if all you can do is breathe, sit, or weep—that’s enough. That is sacred ground. The silence isn’t empty. God is in it. You are not alone.
