Scripture: Matthew 10:29–31 (WEB)
“Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore, don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.”
It seems obvious that God shows up in the grand and the glorious, but what about the unnoticed or the forgotten?
Jesus points us to the overlooked and the seemingly insignificant parts of our lives.
God is in the small things.
Not a single bird falls to the ground without God noticing.
Not a single strand of your hair is uncounted by Him.
God is paying attention to the aspects of your life you may never notice.
The intensity and immensity of God’s love sees your often forgotten tasks, your quiet sadness, and your simple joys.
We may dismiss parts of our day as unimportant: waiting in traffic, sweeping the floor, waiting for water to boil. These and the dramatic, busy times are the various colors and brushstrokes of a complete life. God is present and interested in every one of those moments.
Walking with God means we notice what He already sees.
When we notice what God already sees, we begin to see how God is working. God wants us to join him in that work. We begin to see what we have missed: the opportunities for joy, for service – for love.
When we give attention to the present, even the trivial things in life become holy.
Practice: Sacred Tasks
Choose one small, daily task – washing dishes, riding in an elevator, watering a plant—and do it as a devotion. Before you begin, say:
“You see me, God. This moment is holy.”
As you go through the task, bring your full attention to it. Let it become a quiet offering.
Journaling Prompt
“When do I feel unseen in my daily life? How can I invite God into those moments?”
Let your pen reveal what you’ve ignored. Let it become prayer.
Closing Blessing
Know today that you are not forgotten.
In your tasks, your down-time, and your busyness.
Be still and recognize the God who counts the birds
and the strands of your hair.
Let the most mundane or forgotten task be consumed with His presence.
“As You Go” Prayer
Inhale: “You see the sparrows…”
Exhale: “…and You see me too.”
