Heroes: Priscilla & Aquila
Tentmaking mentors who sharpen leaders

Scripture: Acts 18:1–3, 24–26; Romans 16:3–5

But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside, and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

Reflection

Priscilla and Aquila meet Paul in Corinth as fellow tentmakers. They share a trade, a home, and soon, a mission. They work with their hands during the day and host a church in their house. Their names usually appear together, a married team serving side by side.

Later, in Ephesus, they encounter Apollos—a gifted speaker, well-versed in Scripture, passionate and eloquent, but missing some key pieces of the story. He knows about John’s baptism but not the fullness of Christ’s work.

Priscilla and Aquila don’t publicly correct him or embarrass him. They “took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” Quietly, respectfully, they help sharpen a leader who will become a powerful teacher in the early church.

They represent a kind of ministry many of us overlook: thoughtful, relational discipleship. They use their home as a classroom. They use their trade as a context for partnership. They use their understanding of the gospel to strengthen others.

You might not think of yourself as a “theologian,” but every time you help someone see Jesus more clearly, you are doing theology. Every time you gently correct a misunderstanding about God, every time you share how Scripture fits together, every time you walk with someone in spiritual growth, you are joining the quiet work of Priscilla and Aquila.

Unassuming heroes often teach over meals, at kitchen tables, beside workbenches, and in living rooms. Their influence spreads through the lives of the people they have loved and equipped.

Centering Prayer

God of Truth and Grace,

Thank you for those who have taken me aside and taught me gently. Grow in me both a hunger to understand you more deeply and a tenderness in how I share what I know. Make my conversations safe places for learning and correction, centered on your love and truth. – Amen

Practice for Today

Have one intentional spiritual conversation—with a friend, family member, or small group. Ask a good question or share a helpful insight and listen as much as you speak.

Journaling Prompt

Who in my life might need a “Priscilla and Aquila” conversation—private, respectful, and grounded in Scripture? How can I prepare my heart to offer that well?

Closing Blessing

Be a quiet steward of truth.
Let Scripture seep into your mind and speech.
Correct gently, in love, when the Spirit prompts you.
Open your home and heart as a classroom of grace.

Pray as You Go

Breathe in: Teach me truth…
Breathe out: … help me share it gently
