Scripture: Matthew 5:28

“But I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Reflection

Jesus turns our attention from outward behavior to inward desire. Adultery is not just an external act but a corruption of the heart. Lust begins in the imagination, reshaping people into objects and distorting the beauty of God’s design.

This teaching is not meant to heap shame but to bring freedom. Desire itself is not sinful—God created us with deep longings for intimacy, love, and beauty. But when desire twists into selfish craving, it poisons our hearts. Jesus calls us back to purity, not by repressing desire but by redirecting it toward love that honors God and others.

The Spirit makes this transformation possible. He cleanses the imagination, reshapes the will, and restores dignity where sin has deformed it. Purity is not perfection but wholeness —the integrity of a heart aligned with God’s love. It is here that we find freedom.

Centering Prayer

Lord,

Purify my heart and desires. Heal what is broken in me and restore my imagination. Teach me to honor others as Your children created in Your image, and let my desires reflect Your love. – Amen.

Practice for Today

Notice where your eyes and mind wander.
When temptation arises, turn it into a prayer: “Spirit, redirect my heart toward what is pure and true.”

Journaling Prompt

How do I experience the pull of unhealthy desire?
Where have I seen God purify my heart and set me free?

Closing Blessing

Let your desires be healed in Christ.
See others through the lens of His love.
Live in the wholeness of the Spirit’s purity.
Walk today with a heart made free.

Pray as You Go

Breathe in: Pure in desire…
Breathe out: ... whole in You.”
