Scripture: Exodus 3:1-2
“Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness and came to God’s mountain, to Horeb. Yahweh’s angel appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the middle of a bush.”
Moses wasn’t looking for a life mission the day God called him. He was doing the same work he’d been doing for years—tending sheep in the wilderness.
It had been decades since his dramatic escape from Egypt. His original dream of being a prince in Egypt was buried under the dust of disappointment and exile. He didn’t have a grand life goal but found himself tending sheep day after day.
And then it happened.
An ordinary day became holy ground.
God didn’t wait for Moses to feel ready. He didn’t call him from a position of power or influence, but from a life that looked like it had already settled into obscurity. The burning bush wasn’t in a palace—it was in the wilderness.
That’s the nature of God’s call.
It often comes while we’re in the middle of something ordinary, unexpected, or even unwanted. It interrupts our routine, reframes our past, and redirects our future.
Moses’ story reminds us: you don’t have to be in the “right place” to hear God’s call. You just have to be paying attention when the bush starts burning.
Centering Prayer
God,
Help me notice when You are breaking into my ordinary days.
Give me eyes to see holy ground in unexpected places.
Call me out of complacency and into the joy of following You. Amen.
Practice for Today
Pay attention to interruptions today.
Instead of seeing them as distractions, ask:
“Is God speaking here?”
Even an inconvenient moment may be a burning bush in disguise.
Journaling Prompt
When have I felt like my life was in a “wilderness” season?
What surprising ways might God have been at work during that time?
Closing Blessing
Expect to see God in places you wouldn’t expect.
Look for God in the ordinary.
Pay attention when you see His fire burning in

Inhale: This is holy ground…
Exhale: …and I am listening.
