Heroes: Bezalel & Oholiab
Artists and artisans as carriers of God’s presence
Scripture: Exodus 31:1–6; 36:1
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri… to devise skillful works. I myself have appointed with him Oholiab…
Reflection
When we imagine “spiritual heroes,” we often picture preachers, prophets, or miracle workers. But in the building of the tabernacle, God highlights two men whose primary tools were not microphones but chisels, needles, and hammers.
Bezalel and Oholiab are introduced with unusual language: God says “in the heart of all who are wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded you. (Exodus 31:6) Their artistry is not a side hobby; it is Spirit-empowered ministry.
They shape gold, carve wood, weave fabric, and craft beautiful objects that will hold, surround, and point to the presence of God among His people. Their work is precise, detailed, and mostly unspoken. No one writes down their words. We remember their craft and what they created with God’s inspiration.
Unassuming heroes today include every believer who weaves beauty into the world: designers, musicians, carpenters, quilters, coders, cooks, photographers, gardeners—anyone whose hands create spaces and objects that reflect God’s order, care, and creativity.
Maybe you struggle to see your own creative work as “spiritual” because it doesn’t look like traditional church ministry. But what if your art, your craftsmanship, your attention to detail is one of the ways God makes His presence tangible?
A well-crafted room where people gather can become holy ground.
A song can soften a heart that a sermon can’t reach.
A handmade gift can whisper, “You are seen and loved.”
Bezalel and Oholiab remind you that the Spirit fills more than pulpits; He fills workshops, studios, kitchens, and craft tables too.
Centering Prayer
Creator God,
You formed the world with wisdom and beauty. You see the work of my hands, even when it seems ordinary. Center me in your presence as I do my tasks today. Fill me with your Spirit for this work and let what I make—seen or unseen—become a small tabernacle of your glory. – Amen
Practice for Today
Choose one task or creative act today—however mundane—and consciously offer it to God. Before you begin, say, “This is for You,” and do it with extra care and love.
Journaling Prompt
How might I reimagine my daily work, creativity, or attention to detail as part of God’s dwelling place among people?
Closing Blessing
Use the skills God has given you to craft holy spaces.
Let your hands move with intention and love.
Invite God’s Spirit into every detail you shape or arrange.
Build quiet tabernacles of beauty in the middle of ordinary life.
Pray as You Go
Breath in: Work in me...
Breathe out: ... shape my work for You
