Today’s devotion invites us live as light in a dark world

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8–10
For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.
The small ruler
I must hide what is unfinished in me so others will think I am doing well.
The grace I receive
Christ’s light allows me to live honestly while continuing to grow.
Reflection
Hiding can feel safe.
If there are parts of ourselves we believe are inadequate, unfinished, or unacceptable, staying in the shadows seems to reduce the risk of exposure.
Shame tells us that if people really saw who we really are, we might lose our place.
Grace has been telling us something different.
Paul says we are now light in the Lord.
Light is sometimes used in religious language as a threat. Everything will be exposed. Everything hidden will be revealed.
But the light of Christ does more than expose.
Light lets us see.
It brings clarity to things we could not understand in darkness. It helps us recognize what is actually there instead of what fear told us was there.
When shame begins losing its power, there is less reason to hide.
We can see something within ourselves that needs to change without immediately turning that awareness into guilt or self-condemnation. We can recognize an old pattern and say, “I do not need this anymore.”
That is growth.
The Spirit begins giving us new perceptions, feelings, and attitudes. We see the same circumstances differently because we are no longer seeing them through the same fear.
An old disappointment may no longer define the future.
Another person’s success may no longer diminish us.
A weakness may become something God can work through instead of something we need to conceal.
We are still unfinished.
Light does not require otherwise.
Paul says the fruit of light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. Those things become visible in us as Christ becomes more visible through us.
We do not have to make ourselves shine.
We can stop hiding and let the life already within us become easier to see.
A prayer of presence
God of light,
There are still places where I am tempted to hide because I do not feel adequate. Your grace gives me permission to see myself honestly without condemnation. Awaken my perception. Let Your light show me what is true and what You are still forming.

A practice of grace
Notice one part of yourself you usually judge quickly. Look at it without trying to defend or repair it. Ask, “God, what do You want me to see here now?”
