Scripture: Revelation 21:1-5
I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.” He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”
The Pressure I Feel
I can look toward the future as a threat to survive or a destination too distant to shape my life now.
The Grace I Receive
Christ forms His renewed life in me so I can participate with God in what He is making new.
Reflection
The Formed Future began at a threshold. We pictured a person learning to stand and walk steadily while the world around them changed. The first task was simple and difficult: stop being tossed around. Find a center strong enough to respond instead of living in reaction.
Thirty-one days later, the horizon has changed.
Revelation gives us the final image: a new heaven, a new earth, and the New Jerusalem coming down from God. The movement is worth noticing. Babel tried to climb upward and make a name. The New Jerusalem comes down as gift. Humanity does not manufacture the future God intends. God brings renewal, presence, healing, and life.
Then comes the sentence that gathers the whole vision: “Behold, I am making all things new.”
All things. The inner life. Relationships. Communities. Culture. The world. Creation itself. The movement we have followed through these devotions has always been moving in that direction.
You have practiced standing steadily when circumstances try to make decisions for you. You have learned to notice pressure before pressure becomes formation. You have listened to fear without letting fear lead. You have practiced presence, discernment, wisdom, love, compassion, vocation, shalom, and reconciliation. Each practice has been a way of allowing the life of Christ to take deeper form within you.
Now the title becomes personal. The Formed Future is more than a future we hope to see. It is a life being formed in Christ.
The invitation is to become the sign of God’s future in the present. Where anxiety dominates, carry peace. Where people become abstractions, see the neighbor. Where efficiency replaces presence, stay human. Where division grows, practice reconciliation. Where fear narrows the soul, let love widen it. Where the future feels overwhelming, take the next faithful step with God.
You will never carry the whole future. You were never asked to. You can carry the life of Christ into the part of the future that meets you today.
The future God is forming is already beginning in you.
Formation Practice
Take a few quiet minutes to look back across these 31 days. Name one pressure you recognize more clearly now. Name one practice that has helped you become steadier. Name one way your perception has changed. Name one place where love is becoming more visible. Name one faithful step that feels like yours to take.
Then complete this sentence in your own words: With God, I want to become a person who…
Keep that sentence where you can return to it. Let it become a direction rather than a demand. Continue practicing the future God is forming in you.
Prayer of Formation
Lord Jesus,
You are making all things new. Continue that work in me. Form my thoughts, desires, relationships, choices, work, and presence around the life of Christ. Keep me steady when the world shifts. Make me wise, loving, courageous, and hopeful. Let my life become the sign of Your future in the places You give me. Lead me into what comes next with You.
– Amen
Carry This Prayer
Breathe in: Make Your future alive in me…
Breathe out: …let Your life shine through me
