Here is a devotion to start your day!
A spoken version of this devotion is available through the Still, Here audio reflections podcast.
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1–8
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” He lay down and slept under a juniper tree;
Reflection
Elijah, the man God chose to proclaim truth in the face of evil, has just taken down false prophets, prayed down fire from heaven, and watched God move in a powerful way. You might expect him to be at his strongest. Instead, under death threats from Jezebel, he runs. Exhausted and afraid, he collapses under a broom tree and prays to die.
Elijah is in a wilderness in more ways that one.
His wilderness is not just sand and heat, but the inner landscape of burnout—when even prophets lose heart, when even the faithful want to quit. Elijah’s prayer is raw and unedited: “It is enough… take away my life.”
Notice how God responds. No rebuke. No lecture on faith. In fact, there are not words from God at all. Instead, an angel touches him, offers food and water, and tells him to rest. Twice. Only after Elijah has slept and eaten does God send him on to the next leg of the journey.
Love in the wilderness looks like this: God tending to our bodies, not just our beliefs. He knows when our weariness is not rebellion but depletion. Sometimes what we need most is not a new assignment, but a nap and a meal under His care.
If you feel like Elijah—done, spent, beyond your limits—hear the gentleness in God’s approach. This season of Lent is not another demand to do more for Him. It is an invitation to be strengthened by Him.
A Prayer of Presence
God who knows my every need,
Meet me where I am worn thin. In my burnout and discouragement, feed me with Your quiet provision. Let me feel your presence when the cares of my world feel overwhelming. And teach me that rest is also holy. – Amen
Practice for Today
Choose one simple, restorative act as an offering to God: an unhurried walk, a short nap, a slow meal without multitasking. Receive it not as laziness, but as cooperation with His care for your body and soul.
Consider This...
Where am I ignoring my God-given limits, and how might God be inviting me to rest rather than simply push harder?
