Today’s devotion teaches us the wisdom comes from God, not ourselves

Scripture: Proverbs 2:1–6
My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you, so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures: then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God. For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
The Pressure I Feel
I have access to more information than I can carry, yet I still need wisdom for how to live.
The Grace I Receive
The Lord gives wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to those who seek Him with an open heart.
Reflection
We live with more information than any generation before us. It comes through phones, feeds, articles, podcasts, videos, alerts, search engines, conversations, and now tools that can produce answers faster than we can test them.
Information is not bad. We need facts. We need learning. We need access to what we do not yet know. But information alone does not make a person wise.
Information gives us data. Knowledge helps us know what a thing is. Understanding helps us see how it works, why it matters, and how it connects. Wisdom teaches us how to live faithfully with what we understand.
That is the gap many people feel. They know more than they can embody. They have heard more than they have practiced. They have collected ideas, but their life has not yet taken a new shape.
Proverbs does not treat wisdom like a download. Wisdom is sought. The ear pays attention. The heart applies itself. The voice calls out. The person searches as for hidden treasure. There is desire, attention, humility, and effort.
Then comes the gift: Yahweh gives wisdom.
We seek, but wisdom is still received. We ask, but wisdom is not manufactured by our urgency. We learn, but the life-giving meaning comes from God.
This matters for The Formed Future because the coming days will not suffer from a lack of information. We will have more data, more analysis, more predictions, more commentary, more answers, and more noise. The question is whether we will become wise.
A wise person does not merely ask, What is happening? A wise person asks, What does this mean before God? What kind of person is this forming in me? What is the faithful response? What is mine to do now?
Do not despise information. But do not confuse it with wisdom. Ask for understanding. Seek the Lord. Wisdom still comes from His mouth.
Formation Practice
Today, choose one concern where you have been gathering information but still feel unclear.
Write or pray these four questions: What do I know? What do I understand? What still needs discernment? What wisdom do I need from God?
Then pause before seeking one more input. Ask God for wisdom first. Let the search for answers become prayerful instead of frantic.
Prayer of Formation
Lord,
You give wisdom. Teach me the difference between more information and deeper understanding. Help me receive knowledge with humility, assess it with discernment, and live it with wisdom. Keep me from chasing every answer while forgetting to ask You. Turn my ear toward wisdom and my heart toward understanding.
