Scripture: Ephesians 2:8–9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Reflection

There is a quiet pressure many carry into their life with God.

It can show up even in worship.

A sense of obligation. A feeling that something must be brought—something done—to make the moment count. As if being present is not enough on its own.

Underneath that is a deeper question: Have I done enough?

The difficulty is that “enough” is never clearly defined. It shifts from person to person, moment to moment. And so the pressure remains—sometimes subtle, sometimes heavy—but always present.

But this passage speaks directly into that tension.

“For by grace you have been saved… not of works…”

What matters most in your relationship with God was never something you could earn.

Not the beginning. Not the continuation.

Grace is not simply how you enter. It is the ground you stand on.

The idea that grace gets you started, but effort keeps you in, sounds reasonable—but it quietly returns you to the very pressure grace was meant to release.

Paul continues: “For we are his workmanship…”

You are not self-made in this relationship. You are formed.

And from that place, something shifts.

Good works are no longer the means of securing your place. They become the natural expression of living within it.

Not striving to be accepted.

But responding because you already are.

This is what it looks like to receive.

To enter into moments—whether in worship or in the ordinary rhythms of life—without trying to prove anything.

To let go of the question, “Have I done enough?”

And instead live from a quieter assurance:

What has been given does not need to be earned.

God of generous grace,

You give without condition. Where pressure remains, bring release. Where striving lingers, bring rest. Let what is already given be received, and let that be enough. – Amen

Scripture: Romans 8:15–16

You didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

Reflection

It can feel like acceptance depends on how well life is lived. Follow the rules, stay close, get it right—and maybe the relationship holds steady. But underneath it all, there is often a fear that something could go wrong. That something could shift.

That fear is not new. It is often learned early—where love and acceptance felt connected to performance.

And over time, that pattern can shape how God is seen.

But this passage speaks directly into that fear: “You didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear…”

Fear is not the foundation of this relationship. Adoption is. Adoption changes everything.

It means belonging is not earned. It is given. It means you are not trying to prove you have a place. You are learning to live within one.

And from that place, something begins to shift.

The question is no longer, “Am I doing enough?”
It becomes, “What does love look like here?”

Even the way obedience is experienced begins to change. It is no longer driven by fear of losing something, but shaped by the steady assurance that nothing needs to be secured.

In a world where approval is often measured—where it can feel like everything is evaluated, counted, and responded to—it is easy to carry that same mindset into faith.

Have I done enough? Have I earned the response?

But belonging does not work that way.

You are not waiting for approval. You are living from it.

The Spirit within you bears witness to this—not as pressure, but as a quiet knowing.

You belong.

God of nearness,

You call what is Yours by name. Where fear lingers, speak belonging. Where distance is felt, draw near. Let Your Spirit bear witness within, until what is true feels steady and known. – Amen

Reflection

It often feels like love has to be maintained.

Do the right things, stay close, keep asking forgiveness, and maybe the relationship stays intact. Slip too far, and it feels uncertain again—like something has to be repaired before it can be trusted.

If effort brought us back to God, then each person would experience a different level of love. Some closer, some further away. Always adjusting. Always wondering. Always a little on edge.

Many have learned this pattern early in life. Love feels connected to performance. Do this, and you are accepted. Fail, and something shifts.

It can feel like our relationship with God works the same way.

But this passage says something entirely different: “In this is love… not that we loved God, but that he loved us.”

Love does not begin with your response. It begins with His.

God does not wait for you to move toward Him before He moves toward you. He has already done so—fully, completely, without holding anything back.

In Jesus, that love is not partial or provisional. It is given. Entirely.

Not something you secure. Something you receive.

This is what gives you freedom.

You are no longer trying to work your way into love or hold onto it through effort. You are invited to live within what has already been given.

To live into that reality.

When you do, you experience release from guilt. You live in the steady assurance that you are not falling out of favor with God. You experience the freedom to draw near to Him without fear or hesitation.

You are already loved.

God of unchanging love,

You move first and hold steady. Before striving begins, You have already given. Let this truth settle deeply. Where there is doubt, bring assurance. Where there is striving, bring rest. And let Your love be known as the ground beneath all things. – Amen

Reflection

For many, their relationship with God still feels uncertain.

Even after years of faith, there can be a quiet sense that something needs to be maintained. That forgiveness must be continually secured. That something could shift if too much is missed or done incorrectly.

The question lingers beneath the surface: What do I need to do to stay in right relationship with God?

That question carries weight.

It creates hesitation. Distance. A subtle, ongoing guilt—even for things that may not be clearly defined.

But this passage speaks in a different way: “We have peace with God.”

Not “we are working toward it.”
Not “we hope to maintain it.”

We have it.

“And we have access… into this grace in which we stand.”

Access is not something you earn. It is something already open.

This is what justification feels like—not just a doctrine, but a release. The guilt is gone. The relationship is not fragile.

God’s presence is not something you attain. It is where you begin.

You don’t visit grace. You live in it.

And from that place, your soul begins to settle.

The sense that God is watching for failure begins to fade.
The need to constantly repair the relationship begins to loosen.
The question of “Have I done enough?” begins to quiet.

You are not standing outside, trying to get in.

You are already here.

God of unbroken peace,

You have already drawn near. Before effort begins, You are here. Let what is already true be received. Let distance give way to nearness. And let peace be known as the place where we stand. – Amen

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth changes… (Psalm 46:1–2)

Reflection

The storms of life often hit without warning and without time for preparation. When things seem to be falling apart it’s easy to focus on what rages around us and miss what God is doing in us.

Psalm 46 does not describe a calm world. It speaks of mountains shaking, waters roaring, the ground itself giving way. It names what it feels like when life becomes unstable—when what once felt secure begins to shift.

And yet, in that description, we don’t find God rushing in to rescue us from the storm. There is no urgent response from God.

And, notice this: there is no sense of panic. No demand to fix what is happening. No urgent plea to rescue us from the storm.

Only this: God is present.

Not after the storm settles. Not once clarity returns. Right here, in the middle of what feels uncertain.

There is a part of you that wants to rush—to solve, to stabilize, to regain control. But this psalm invites a different response. It invites you to notice that before anything changes around you, something is already steady within you.

God is not only a refuge you run to for protection in life’s storms. He holds you where you are and gives you the strength to continue.

You are not falling behind.
You are not losing ground.

Live in this truth: even here, especially here, you are being held.

God of steady presence,

You are here before anything changes. When everything feels unsettled, let what is within be held in You. Quiet the need to rush. Strengthen what is already steady. And let this moment be enough. – Amen

Scripture: Matthew 4:16–17

The people who sat in darkness saw a great light… From that time Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

Reflection

After the wilderness, Jesus began His ministry.

The struggle had prepared Him for what came next.

Matthew describes this moment using the words of the prophet Isaiah: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.

The wilderness did not stop the story. It clarified it.

Sometimes the seasons that feel most confusing or difficult become the very places where our lives begin to change direction.

They strip away what does not matter.
They remind us what we truly trust.
And then, quietly, the light begins to rise.

Jesus stepped out of the wilderness and into His calling.

And the same pattern often appears in our lives.

The wilderness prepares us. Grace restores us.

And then the path forward begins to appear.

God of new beginnings,

Thank You for the ways You bring light after seasons of darkness. Help me trust that every part of my journey is being shaped by Your wisdom. Lead me forward with courage and hope. – Amen

Scripture: Psalm 46:7

The Lord of Hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge.

Reflection

Psalm 46 speaks of two realities that hold the human soul steady: Refuge, Strength.

Refuge is the space where we are safe. Strength is the structure that keeps us standing.

Both come from God.

Refuge reminds us that we are not abandoned.
Strength reminds us that we are not helpless.

Together they form something beautiful.

A life that is both secure and steady.

This is the rhythm we see throughout Scripture. God’s grace opens the space where life can grow. His covenant gives that life shape and direction.

When both are present, the soul finds stability.

The storms may continue around us, but we are no longer defined by them.

We are held.

Steady God,

You are both my refuge and my strength. Teach me to rest in Your grace while walking in Your wisdom. Shape my life so that I can stand firm even when the winds rise. – Amen

Scripture: Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Reflection

When storms arrive, our instinct is to look for escape.

But the psalmist describes something deeper.

God is not only the one who calms the storm. He is the refuge within it.

A refuge is a place where the winds may still blow outside, but inside there is safety. Inside there is stillness. Inside there is room to breathe.

Many of us spend our lives trying to control circumstances that cannot be controlled.

The psalm invites us to do something different.

Instead of controlling the storm, we enter the refuge. And that refuge is not a place we build for ourselves. It is the presence of God.

When we begin to trust that presence, something inside us settles.

The ground beneath our feet becomes steady again.

Faithful God,

You are closer than the troubles that surround me. Help me step into the refuge of Your presence today. Let Your nearness quiet my anxious thoughts and steady my heart. – Amen

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:5–8

Elijah lay down and slept under a broom tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.”

Reflection

Elijah had reached the end of his strength.

After the dramatic victory on Mount Carmel, the prophet collapsed under a desert tree and whispered the words many exhausted people have spoken: I have had enough.

God did not rebuke him.
God did not lecture him.

Instead, an angel gently woke him and said,

“Get up and eat.”

Bread.
Water.
Rest.

That was the beginning of Elijah’s recovery.

Sometimes we expect spiritual renewal to come through profound insight or dramatic revelation.

But very often, God begins with something much simpler.

Sleep.
Food.
A moment to breathe.

Grace meets us where our bodies and souls are most weary.

Before Elijah could hear God’s whisper on the mountain, he first needed strength for the journey.

And so do we.

Compassionate God,

You understand the places where I feel worn down. Teach me to receive the care You offer instead of pushing past my limits. Restore my strength so I can continue the journey with a renewed spirit. – Amen

The wilderness story ends quietly.

There is no celebration. No dramatic music. Just a simple sentence:

The devil left Him.

And then something beautiful happens: Angels came and ministered to Him.

The care of heaven arrives not during the struggle, but just after it.

Jesus had been hungry, exhausted, and alone. For forty days He carried the weight of testing. Then, when the resistance was complete, help appeared.

This pattern appears throughout Scripture.

God often allows the test to run its course.
But the moment it has finished its work, grace arrives.

Sometimes grace looks like strength.
Sometimes it looks like provision.

And sometimes it simply looks like someone showing up at exactly the right moment.

If you have just walked through a wilderness season, take heart.

The story does not end with the struggle.
The angels are already on their way.

Scripture: John 20:1–18; Luke 24:1–8

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Therefore she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid him!” Jn 20:1-2

Reflection

The first day of the week dawns quietly. While it is still dark, Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb. Other gospels tell us of women bringing spices. They expect a corpse, not a conversation. They come to honor love they believe death has already ended.

Instead, they find the stone rolled away. Angels announce that He is risen. Disciples race to see, then go home unsure. Mary remains, weeping. Through her tears, she turns and sees someone she assumes is the gardener. Only when He says her name—“Mary”—does recognition break through. The voice she has heard before, now on the other side of death.

Love in the wilderness does not stop at the cross. It walks through death and emerges in a garden, calling us by name. The One who was crushed now stands, alive, with scars that shine instead of bleed. He tells Mary not to cling to Him as before; the relationship is changing. He is ascending to His Father and our Father, His God and our God.

These forty days have led you through wilderness, confession, surrender, and hope in the shadow of the cross. But this is not the end. Resurrection means love is now loose in the world in a new way—closer than your breath, present in every moment of your ordinary life.

Today, listen for the risen Jesus speaking your name.

Risen Lord,

Meet me in the half-light of my confusion and grief. Call me by name until I recognize Your living presence. Lead me from clinging fearinto a deeper life in Your risen love. – Amen

Practice for Today

Find a quiet moment and imagine yourself in the garden near the empty tomb. Hear Jesus say your name. Ask Him, “What do You want me to know as I step beyond these forty days?” Write down any phrase, scripture, or impression that comes.

Scripture: John 19:38–42

After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body. Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds. V. 38-39

Reflection

Joseph of Arimathea is a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews. Nicodemus came to Jesus by night. Two cautious men, moving in the shadows. After the crucifixion, something changes. Joseph goes boldly to Pilate and asks for Jesus’ body. Nicodemus brings a costly mixture of myrrh and aloes—about seventy-five pounds. Together, they wrap Jesus in linen with spices and lay Him in a new tomb.

When Jesus is alive and popular, they are quiet. When He is dead and disgraced, they step into the light. Their care is tender, reverent, lavish. They risk reputation, status, and safety to honor the broken body of the One they could not fully claim before.

Love in the wilderness sometimes ripens late. Our courage may lag behind our belief. Yet God is patient, and there are moments when grace invites us to finally move from secret sympathy to public devotion. Joseph and Nicodemus miss the chance to stand at the cross, but they do not miss the chance to serve at the tomb.

Where have you stayed safely in the shadows—afraid of what following Jesus might cost? Lent calls you toward a braver love, even if your yes comes later than you wish.

Jesus, patient with my hesitations,

Thank You for calling secret disciples into the light. Give me courage, like Joseph and Nicodemus, to risk my reputation when love requires it and to honor You openly with my life. – Amen

Take one step, however small, to “come into the light” in your faith—mentioning Jesus in a conversation, sharing a scripture, or identifying yourself as a follower where you usually stay silent.

There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. Mk 15:40-41

Reflection

As darkness covers the land and Jesus hangs on the cross, many have fled. But some remain. Mark tells us of women watching from a distance—Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and Salome—who had followed and served Him in Galilee. They are not at the center of power; they are at the edges of tragedy, eyes fixed on the One they love.

Nearby stands a Roman centurion, a man used to executions. He has likely seen many die. Yet something about this death is different—the darkness, the cry, the composure, the love. When Jesus breathes His last, the centurion says, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

From the margins of gender and empire, the truth about Jesus is seen and spoken. The women, often overlooked, are faithful witnesses. The centurion, part of the occupying force, becomes an unlikely confessor. Love in the wilderness is recognized not only by insiders, but by those watching from unexpected places.

You may feel distant, powerless, or on the edges of what God seems to be doing. Yet your watching, your clinging love, your whispered “Truly” matters. The cross is not only for those in the inner circle; it is for all who gaze and believe.

Crucified Son of God,

I stand with the women and the centurion, watching from the margins. Open my eyes to see Your love even in the darkest places and give me courage to say, “Truly, You are the One.” – Amen

Take a few moments to “stand” at the cross in your imagination. Place yourself either with the women or the centurion. What do you see, hear, or feel? Let any simple response—tears, words, silence—be your act of worship.

Scripture: Luke 23:26; Mark 15:21

When they led him away, they grabbed one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry it after Jesus. Lk 23:26

Reflection

Simon is coming in from the country, likely minding his own business, when soldiers seize him and force him to carry Jesus’ cross. He did not volunteer. He is pulled, perhaps unwillingly, into the most important moment in history.

Mark tells us he is “the father of Alexander and Rufus,” suggesting that later believers knew his family. This burdensome interruption may have become the doorway to faith—not only for Simon, but for his household. Under the weight of that wood, step by step beside the beaten Christ, Simon experiences something no one else does: the close, heavy companionship of shared suffering.

Sometimes love in the wilderness looks like being conscripted into someone else’s pain. We did not choose the timing, the relationship, or the load—but here it is, laid across our shoulders. The question then becomes: will we carry it begrudgingly, or will we discover Christ beside us as we do?

Jesus carries the sin of the world; Simon carries the rough beam for a little while. Your cross-bearing for others will never be redemptive the way His is—but it can be a living echo of His love.

Jesus, burden-bearer,

Meet me when a cross is laid on my shoulders that I did not choose. As I carry others’ weight, let me find myself walking beside You, sharing in Your love for them. – Amen

Practice for Today

Notice one “interruption” that feels like an unwanted weight—someone’s need, an extra responsibility, a sudden request. Ask Jesus how you might carry it today as a way of walking beside Him, rather than only resenting it.

In Gethsemane, Jesus invites His closest friends to watch and pray with Him. Then He goes a little farther, falls on His face, and prays, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what You desire.”

This is not stoic acceptance. It is agonized surrender. His soul is “exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.” He comes back to find His friends sleeping when He needs them most. Twice more He prays. Twice more He returns to drowsy disciples. Still, He stays. He does not run from the garden, even though the exit is open. He waits until the betrayer arrives.

Love in the wilderness sometimes looks like this: staying where we would rather flee for the sake of God’s will and others’ good. Jesus chooses the Father’s path in sweat and tears, not in easy calm. Your own surrendered yes may feel like that—shaky, repeated, soaked in anguish and trust.

The good news is that Jesus has been there before you. When you feel alone in your “garden,” remember: He stayed so He could be with you in yours.

Suffering Savior,

Thank You for staying in the garden when everything in You ached to leave. When I face my own cup of sorrow, meet me in the struggle and strengthen me to say, “Your will, not mine.” – Amen

Practice for Today

Name one hard thing you cannot immediately change or escape. Instead of fantasizing about exit, spend a few minutes simply sitting with God in that reality, praying Jesus’ words: “Not what I desire, but what You desire.”

Scripture: John 13:1–15

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God, arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel and wrapped a towel around his waist. V.3-4

Reflection

John tells us Jesus knew three things: that His hour had come, that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was going back to God. Knowing this, He rises from supper, lays aside His outer garment, takes a towel, and begins to wash His disciples’ feet.

Power in His hands, a towel around His waist. That is the shape of love.

Feet in that world are dusty, calloused, and often foul. This is servants’ work, low work. But the Lord and Teacher kneels before each disciple—yes, even Judas—and touches the places that have picked up grime along the way. Peter protests, wanting a more “spiritual” Jesus. Jesus insists: If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.

Love in the wilderness is not content to love from a distance. It stoops. It handles the dirt of our journey without disgust. It ties on the towel and says, “Let Me cleanse you.” Then Jesus tells them—and us—to do the same for one another.

Today, allow Jesus to wash the parts of you that feel unpresentable. Then ask how you might pick up a towel for someone else.

Jesus, Lord and Servant,

I bring You my travel-stained feet. Wash what is tired, soiled, and ashamed. Wrap Your towel around my life and teach me to serve others with the same humble love. – Amen

Practice for Today

Do one “towel act” of service—something practical and humble that may go unnoticed: cleaning up, running an errand, helping with a task. Offer it as a direct imitation of Jesus’ love.

Scripture: Mark 14:12–16; Luke 22:7–13

“Go into the city, and there a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters in, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciple?”’ He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready.” Vs 13-15

Reflection

As Passover approaches, the disciples ask where Jesus wants to eat the meal. He sends two of them into the city with simple instructions: follow a man carrying a water jar, and he will lead you to a house. There, an upper room is already furnished and ready.

We don’t know the host’s name. We don’t hear his words. We only see his yes. His home becomes the setting for some of the most intimate moments in the gospels: the Last Supper, footwashing, new commandments, promises of the Spirit. A hidden room becomes holy ground because an unnamed person opens the door.

Love in the wilderness often looks like this: making space. Preparing a room in our schedule, our home, our attention, where Jesus can meet with people He loves. The host fades into the background, but heaven remembers the hospitality that held the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup.

You may never preach a sermon or write a book, but you can prepare a place—a table, a conversation, a listening ear—for Jesus to work.

Today, ask: where in my life is there an “upper room” I can offer?

Jesus,

Thank You for the hidden hosts who make room for You and for others. Show me the “upper room” in my own life and give me the courage and generosity to open it when You ask. – Amen

Consider one simple act of hospitality—inviting someone for coffee, writing a kind note, creating a quiet space at home for prayer. Intentionally dedicate that space or act to Jesus’ presence and purposes.

Scripture: Luke 19:28–40; Matthew 21:1–5

Then they brought it to Jesus. They threw their cloaks on the colt and sat Jesus on them. As he went, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was now getting near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen. Vs 35-36

Reflection

Jesus could have chosen war horses and silver chariots. Instead, He sends for a borrowed donkey. The King of kings rides into Jerusalem on the kind of animal used for everyday work and peaceful procession.

Crowds spread cloaks and branches on the road. They shout, “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” It looks like a coronation, but Jesus knows what lies ahead: not a throne, but a cross. Still, He comes. Still, He rides.

Matthew notes that this fulfills the prophecy: “Behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey.” The humility is the point. This is what God’s reign looks like when it draws near—not intimidation, but invitation. Not crushing force, but courageous gentleness.

We often want God to arrive in our lives with spectacle—to overpower our enemies, silence our critics, fix everything at once. Instead, He usually comes like this: lowly, near, asking, “Will you welcome Me?”

Love in the wilderness comes riding on a borrowed animal, through ordinary streets, with a heart set on saving those who will soon shout, “Crucify.”

Today, watch for the humble ways Jesus is entering your world.

You come to me without swagger or force. Open my eyes to recognize Your lowly arrival. Let me spread my own “cloak” of surrender on the road of my everyday life. – Amen

Welcome Jesus into one very ordinary part of your day—commuting, dishes, work, errands. Whisper “Hosanna” there, asking Him to save and reign in that specific space.

Scripture: Isaiah 42:1–4; Matthew 12:15–21

“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit on him. He will proclaim justice to the nations. He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a smoking flax, until he leads justice to victory. In his name, the nations will hope.”

Reflection

Isaiah describes God’s Servant in surprising terms. He will bring justice to the nations, but not by shouting or crushing. “A bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench.” He is both strong and gentle, steadfast and tender.

Matthew sees this prophecy fulfilled in Jesus. Crowds press in, the sick are healed, the religious leaders plot, and yet Jesus moves quietly, telling people not to make Him known. His strength is not bluster; it is a steady, compassionate presence that refuses to discard the weak.

A bruised reed is bent, compromised, easily snapped. A smoldering wick is smoky, barely holding flame. These are images of fragile people: worn-out caregivers, struggling believers, traumatized hearts, tired souls. Our instinct is often to write off what seems too damaged or too faint. Jesus’ instinct is to protect, tend, and restore.

Hope, for the bruised and smoldering, is not in our ability to “bounce back,” but in His refusal to give up on us. Lent can stir up awareness of just how bruised we are. The good news is that we are held in hands that will not crush what is already tender.

Love in the wilderness says, “You may feel like a reed or a wick, but you are safe with Me.”

Gentle Savior,

You see my bruises and my dimming flame. Handle me with Your steady kindness. Do not let me snap or go out, but strengthen what is weak and breathe on what still flickers. – Amen

Practice for Today

Notice where you feel most fragile—physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Instead of demanding more from yourself, intentionally choose one gentle, nourishing action and offer that choice to Jesus as an act of trust.

Scripture: John 11:17–44

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

Reflection

By the time Jesus arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has been in the tomb four days. Martha meets Him first, grief tangled with faith: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” She believes in a future resurrection. Jesus tells her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Mary comes next, falls at His feet, and says the same first words: “Lord, if you had been here…” Her sorrow moves Him deeply. He sees her weeping, sees the mourners, and is troubled. Then comes the shortest, and one of the most powerful, verses in Scripture: “Jesus wept.”

He knows He is about to call Lazarus out of the tomb. Yet He still stands in the middle of their grief and feels it with them. Resurrection hope does not short-circuit sorrow; it enters it. Then, at the tomb, He cries with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” Death obeys.

Hope in Christ is not a thin optimism that tells you to cheer up because “everything happens for a reason.” It is a Savior who weeps at your graveyard and still has authority to speak life.

Love in the wilderness stands beside you in tears before it calls you out into joy.

Jesus,

You are the resurrection and the life. Thank You for weeping where I weep and not rushing me past my grief. Stand with me at the tombs in my life and speak Your living word in Your time. – Amen

Practice for Today

If you are carrying grief, allow yourself to name it specifically before God—perhaps even out loud. Picture Jesus beside you, tears in His eyes. If possible, take a brief walk or sit somewhere quiet as an act of letting Him accompany you.
