Scripture: Ephesians 3:16–19

that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Reflection

Yesterday we came to the end of Love Beyond Measure.

For thirty-one days we have been paying attention to what God is doing within us. We have talked about belonging, grace, resurrection power, being brought near, being rooted in love, walking from grace, living as light, and standing in the strength God gives.

It would be easy to finish a journey like that and immediately ask, What do I do next?

Maybe there is another question to consider first.

What has changed within me?

You may not have a dramatic answer. Most spiritual formation does not announce itself that way. We often recognize it later, when a situation that once would have overwhelmed us does not have quite the same power.

Maybe you recover from fear a little faster. Maybe shame does not keep you hidden as long. Maybe you notice God’s presence sooner. Maybe you are less compelled to defend yourself. Maybe there are moments when love has become more natural than reaction.

Those changes matter.

Paul prayed that believers would be strengthened with power through the Spirit in the inward person. He connected that inner strength with Christ dwelling in the heart and with being rooted and grounded in love.

Strength, in Paul’s prayer, is not hardness. It is coherence. The life within us begins to come together around the presence and love of Christ.

A coherent person does not have to know what will happen next in order to remain themselves. They can enter uncertainty without every change becoming a threat to their identity.

The future may still feel bigger than you think you can handle.

That feeling does not mean you are unprepared.

You are not entering what comes next as the person you were before God began this work. Everything He has been forming within you is still here.

You know where you belong. You know where your strength comes from. You are beginning to recognize the Spirit’s movement within you. Love is becoming more than an idea you believe. It is becoming a place from which you live.

You do not have to rush away from that.

Let it settle.

Before we begin asking what the future may require, notice the person who will meet it.

You may be stronger than you know.

A prayer of presence

God,

I am often quicker to notice what is unfinished than what You have already formed. Help me recognize the quiet strength of Your Spirit within me. Let the love I have received settle more deeply into who I am. When the future feels larger than I can handle, remind me that I do not enter it alone or unchanged. Your life is already at work within me.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Take a few quiet minutes and look back over the past month. Do not evaluate how well you completed the devotions. Instead, ask, “What feels different within me?” Notice one change, however small, and receive it as evidence that formation is already happening.

Where am I stronger, steadier, or more aware of God than I was a month ago?

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–11, 13–18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil... Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and, having done all, to stand.

Reflection

Paul ends Ephesians with the language of battle.

But his repeated instruction is not attack.

It is stand.

He also makes something clear that is easily forgotten: people are not the enemy.

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood.

The struggle includes the forces that keep pulling us toward the old ways of living. Fear. Shame. Deception. Hostility. Domination. Separation. The belief that we have to produce our own strength.

We have spent thirty days loosening those old rulers.

Now Paul says to stay awake.

Spiritual warfare does not require us to become suspicious of everyone around us or to see every problem as a supernatural attack. It asks us to remain vigilant when the old self begins offering familiar answers again.

Look at the armor Paul gives us.

Truth. We have learned to recognize the false measures we once used.

Righteousness. Our identity is received in Christ.

Peace. Christ Himself is our peace.

Faith. We trust beyond what we can presently see.

Salvation. race has already acted.

The word of God. Truth continues shaping how we perceive life.

Prayer. We remain present to God.

This is not new equipment handed to us on the final day.

This is the life God has been forming throughout the journey.

The reader who began these devotions was tired from trying to find a place in God’s kingdom. There was a lot of searching. A lot of measuring. A lot of trying to become the person God might finally approve.

Now there can be less searching and more receiving.

God in you is the place.

Standing does not mean you will never become tired. Sometimes tiredness may simply reveal that you have begun trying to do everything in your own strength again.

You can notice that.

You can return.

You do not have to brace yourself against everything the world might do.

You know where you belong.

You know what holds you.

You know where your strength comes from.

You do not need another ruler.

Grace has given you a place to stand.

Love has taught you how to walk.

Now stand in the strength God gives.

A prayer of presence

God,

I know where I belong. I know what holds me. I confess how easily I return to my own strength when I become afraid or tired. Everything You have been forming within me is still here. Let truth, peace, faith, grace, and prayer keep me awake to Your presence. I stand with Christ.

A practice of grace

Stand quietly for a moment with both feet firmly on the floor. Feel the ground beneath you. Name one thing you are facing and say, “I do not have to brace against this alone. I stand in the strength God gives.”

How has my answer changed to the question, “Where is my place in God’s kingdom?”

Scripture: Ephesians 5:21

Subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

Reflection

Some of the words that follow Ephesians 5:21 have been used badly.

Paul writes about wives and husbands, children and parents, servants and masters. In different times and places, these verses have been used to tell one person that God requires them to submit to another person’s control.

That cannot be separated from what Paul says first: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Christ is the head.

Power belongs to Him.

When we claim power in order to make ourselves more important than another person, we are no longer expressing the power of Christ. We have returned to personal ambition, pride, and the world’s way of arranging people according to rank.

Grace changes power.

Jesus did not need to diminish people in order to show His strength. He often revealed what was already happening within them. He restored dignity. He served. He told the truth. He refused to be controlled by the expectations of others.

Mutual submission means that the relationship is no longer organized around getting my way.

We ask what is good for us, not merely what is good for me.

That requires humility, but it also requires strength.

Christlike self-giving does not mean erasing yourself. It does not mean remaining under abuse, coercion, or another person’s attempt to dominate you. Anyone who uses power to diminish the image of God within you is not exercising Christ’s power.

Our first allegiance remains with Christ.

That matters in marriage. It matters between parents and children. It matters in churches, workplaces, friendships, and every relationship where one person has authority or influence.

Love refuses to dominate the image of God in another person.

It also refuses to surrender that image within ourselves to someone else’s domination.

We are not depleting our own power when we love this way.

We are allowing Christ’s power to move through us.

That source does not run dry.

A prayer of presence

Christ,

You are the head of my life and the source of whatever strength I carry. Keep me from using power to control another person or surrendering the dignity You have placed within me. Teach me the strength of mutual care. Let love shape how I use whatever influence You have entrusted to me.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Think about one close relationship. Ask yourself, “Am I trying to control the outcome, or am I seeking what is good for both of us?” Notice what changes when Christ, rather than winning, becomes the center.

Consider this…

How would one of my closest relationships change if power were measured by love rather than control?

Scripture: Ephesians 5:15–18

Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.

Reflection

We can turn almost anything into another measure.

Even time.

How productive was I today? How much did I accomplish? Did I use every hour well?

We may hear Paul’s words about “redeeming the time” and assume he is telling us to become more efficient.

That does not fit the movement of Ephesians.

Paul tells us to walk wisely and understand God’s will. He tells us to be filled with the Spirit.

Wisdom is not simply about how to get more done. It is becoming sensitive to the direction God is already leading.

Earlier we described God’s will as a compass rather than a detailed map.

The compass gives direction.

As grace forms us, we become more able to recognize that direction in everyday life. We notice what produces peace, love, truth, courage, and a deeper awareness of God’s presence. We become sensitive to what pulls us back toward fear, comparison, hurry, and the pressure to conform.

When life is pressing us to conform, we often feel the need to push faster.

When God is directing us, there is a different kind of movement.

We may still work hard. We may have deadlines and responsibilities. But underneath them there is less panic.

Redeeming the time can mean being awake enough to live the moment God has given us.

Yesterday does not need another hour of guilt.

Tomorrow does not need today’s anxiety.

This present moment is where we can meet God.

Paul’s description of being filled with the Spirit is also strikingly ordinary. He moves quickly into worship, thankfulness, conversation, and shared life.

Spirit-filled living is not necessarily spectacular.

It becomes visible in how we inhabit the day and how we relate to the people in it.

The Spirit becomes the motivating power beneath our actions.

We stop asking, “How much did I accomplish?”

We begin noticing, “Where was God moving today, and did I make room to move with Him?”

A prayer of presence

Spirit of God,

The pressure to hurry can make me miss the life directly in front of me. I release yesterday and tomorrow for this moment. Direct my energy toward what matters now. Fill me again so that what I do grows from Your presence rather than pressure.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Choose one ordinary activity today and focus only that activity while you are doing it. Let yourself be fully present. Notice whether God feels different when you are not rushing toward the next thing.

Where has productivity become a ruler for measuring whether my day mattered?

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8–10

For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.

Reflection

Hiding can feel safe.

If there are parts of ourselves we believe are inadequate, unfinished, or unacceptable, staying in the shadows seems to reduce the risk of exposure.

Shame tells us that if people really saw who we really are, we might lose our place.

Grace has been telling us something different.

Paul says we are now light in the Lord.

Light is sometimes used in religious language as a threat. Everything will be exposed. Everything hidden will be revealed.

But the light of Christ does more than expose.

Light lets us see.

It brings clarity to things we could not understand in darkness. It helps us recognize what is actually there instead of what fear told us was there.

When shame begins losing its power, there is less reason to hide.

We can see something within ourselves that needs to change without immediately turning that awareness into guilt or self-condemnation. We can recognize an old pattern and say, “I do not need this anymore.”

That is growth.

The Spirit begins giving us new perceptions, feelings, and attitudes. We see the same circumstances differently because we are no longer seeing them through the same fear.

An old disappointment may no longer define the future.

Another person’s success may no longer diminish us.

A weakness may become something God can work through instead of something we need to conceal.

We are still unfinished.

Light does not require otherwise.

Paul says the fruit of light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. Those things become visible in us as Christ becomes more visible through us.

We do not have to make ourselves shine.

We can stop hiding and let the life already within us become easier to see.

A prayer of presence

God of light,

There are still places where I am tempted to hide because I do not feel adequate. Your grace gives me permission to see myself honestly without condemnation. Awaken my perception. Let Your light show me what is true and what You are still forming.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Notice one part of yourself you usually judge quickly. Look at it without trying to defend or repair it. Ask, “God, what do You want me to see here now?”

What might become visible if I no longer needed to manage how I appear?

Scripture: Ephesians 5:1–2

Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us.

Reflection

Paul says, Walk in love.

After everything we have seen in Ephesians, those three words carry more weight than they might have at the beginning.

Love is no longer something we are trying to earn from God. We are not trying to get another person to give us enough love to make us feel whole.

We have been rooted in the love of Christ.

Now that love can move.

Walking in love does not mean becoming agreeable or passive. There are times when love tells the truth. But also times when love draws a boundary, confronts harm, or refuses to participate in destructiveness.

Passivity allows the world around us to determine who we become. Paul has already warned against being shaped by the patterns around us.

Love moves from different direction.

When the love of Christ is becoming the power within us, we can approach disagreement without immediately becoming defensive. We can want what is good for another person without needing to control them. We can remain strong without using strength to dominate.

There is an important difference between trying to follow Christ’s example and allowing Christ’s love to work through us.

If I simply look at Jesus and say, “I should behave more like that,” I can turn love into another performance goal.

I am back to relying on my own power.

Paul has been describing something deeper. Christ dwells within us. The Spirit strengthens the inner person. We are rooted in love.

The source has changed.

Fear reacts to the world. It asks what might happen to me, how I will be judged, whether I am safe, or whether I am enough.

Love begins within the life God is forming in me and moves outward.

We still choose how to respond. But increasingly, those choices come from the love already at work within us.

That is what it means to walk in love.

Not forcing ourselves to appear loving.

Living close enough to Christ that His love begins finding its way through us.

A prayer of presence

Christ,

Your love is already present before I try to express it. I receive that love again today. When fear wants to determine my response, remind me where my life is rooted. Let Your love move through me without my needing to force it.

A practice of grace

Think of one person you are likely to encounter today. Instead of asking what you need from that person, quietly ask, “What might love offer here?”

Scripture: Ephesians 4:25–32

Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear... Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Reflection

Paul has spent much of Ephesians describing what God is doing within us. Now he begins showing what that inner work looks like when other people are involved.

This is where transformation becomes real.

It is one thing to feel peaceful when we are alone. It is another when someone says something that hurts, misunderstands us, disappoints us, or makes us angry.

Anger itself is not necessarily the problem. Paul says, Be angry, and don’t sin. There are things worth being angry about. Truth and righteousness matter. Harm should not be ignored.

The question is what drives us once the anger appears.

When insecurity is driving us, we may need to win the argument, make the other person hurt, prove that we are right, or control how they see us. We give away our power by letting another person’s words determine who we become in that moment.

Grace gives us another source of power.

The Spirit can become the motivator of our response instead of giving in to the first emotion that rises within us.

That does not mean we become passive. We can speak clearly. We can name what happened. We can establish boundaries. We can stand for what is right without using anger to diminish another person.

Paul says our words can give grace to those who hear them.

That does not mean every word has to be measured. It means the love of Christ remains present in what we say.

Forgiveness works in much the same way. Forgiving someone does not mean the harm was acceptable. It means we stop allowing the hurt and anger to control what happens within us. We release the offender into God’s hands and allow God to work where we cannot.

We do not have to win.

Christ already has.

Our words can begin to reflect that settled place within us.

A prayer of presence

Christ,

I notice how quickly hurt can become defensiveness and anger can begin directing my words. I do not want another person’s actions to determine who I become. Let Your grace shape what rises from within me. Give me strength to speak truth without losing love.

A practice of grace

Before responding to something difficult today, pause for one breath. Ask yourself, “What is driving my response right now?” Give the Spirit enough space to answer before you speak.

Where does my need to defend myself sometimes become stronger than my desire to give grace?

Scripture: Ephesians 4:17–24

That you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

The small ruler

I change by trying harder to stop being the old me.

The grace I receive

My mind is being renewed, and the new self God created is taking form.

Reflection

You may already be seeing things differently.

At the beginning of this journey, the questions were often about measuring: Am I doing enough? Am I close enough to God? Am I useful enough? What am I supposed to become?

Those questions may still appear. Old patterns rarely vanish simply because we recognize them.

But they do not have to carry the same authority.

Paul describes putting away the old self and being renewed in the spirit of the mind. We can easily turn that into another project: identify everything wrong with ourselves and construct a better version.

That is familiar territory.

Renewal goes deeper.

Behavior modification starts with a standard and asks us to make ourselves fit it. Renewal changes the way we see. As perception changes, our responses begin changing with it.

The old self includes more than obvious behaviors. It includes the old measuring system: comparison, proving, shame, self-protection, forced strength, and the need for other people to confirm our worth.

Grace has been loosening those rulers.

The new self is not a religious personality we manufacture.

Think of a light bulb. It does not create the energy that passes through it. It receives that energy, and because of what it is, light becomes visible.

Something similar happens as the Spirit renews us.

God’s life moves through the person He has already created. His workmanship becomes easier to see.

You may notice it in small places. Another person succeeds and you do not immediately compare. An old fear rises and you recognize it before it decides what you will do. You notice God in an ordinary moment. You become more curious about what grace is doing than worried about the standard you have not reached.

None of those changes needs to be dramatic.

They are signs of life.

You do not have to create the new self.

You are learning to let the life already flowing from God become visible through you.

A prayer of presence

Spirit of God,

Renew the way I see. I release the old need to measure myself against others or search for an external standard that will finally make me enough. Let Your life move through the person You have created me to be. I receive the newness You are already forming, one ordinary moment at a time.

A practice of grace

Notice one small way you respond differently now than you once did. Do not evaluate whether the change is impressive enough. Simply name it as evidence that renewal is already taking form.

Consider this…

What old ruler can I lay down because I no longer need it to tell you who I am becoming?

Scripture: Ephesians 4:13–16

Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine ... but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ, from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Reflection

Maturity can be hard to recognize.

Sometimes certainty looks like maturity. So does independence. A person who has an answer for everything may appear strong. Someone who expects little from others may seem self-sufficient.

Paul gives us another picture.

We grow up into Christ together.

The mature person has not outgrown the need for other people. They have become secure enough to receive what others bring.

That changes strength.

I no longer need to prove that I can stand alone. I can admit that another person sees something I do not. Their wisdom can help me. Their encouragement can steady me. Their gift can supply what is missing in mine.

Paul also describes maturity as speaking truth in love.

That phrase has sometimes been used to justify harshness. We say what we want to say, call it truth, and assume adding the word love makes the delivery faithful.

Love asks more of us.

It makes us consider why we are speaking. Are we trying to help someone grow, or do we simply need them to know that we are right?

Love affects timing. Sometimes another person needs our presence before they need our insight. Sometimes encouragement will do more than correction.

Without love, truth can easily become shame.

A mature faith remains steady without becoming rigid. It can bend without losing its center. It can listen without surrendering conviction. It stays attentive to the Spirit while the world around it changes.

Paul’s body grows as every part gives and receives.

No one becomes the whole body.

We grow because we belong to one another, and love keeps making room for that growth.

A prayer of presence

Lord Jesus,

Grow Your life within me. Free me from confusing maturity with certainty, independence, or having all the answers. Keep me teachable, connected, and steady in love. When truth needs to be spoken, let love shape my motive, my timing, and my words. Build us together into the fullness of Your life.

A practice of grace

Before offering advice or correction today, ask yourself, “Is love seeking the other person’s growth, or am I trying to relieve my own discomfort?” If no correction is needed, offer encouragement instead.

Scripture: Ephesians 4:7–12

But to each one of us, the grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to people.” ... He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ.

Reflection

We learn to measure ourselves early.

Who is smarter? Stronger? More successful? More talented? More respected?

It is easy to bring those same rulers into the church.

Someone else speaks more confidently. Their ministry is more visible. They seem to know Scripture better. People notice their gifts quickly, while ours may feel ordinary.

Paul uses the language of measure, but he puts the measure in Christ’s hands.

Grace has been given to each of us according to Christ’s gift.

That changes the question.

We no longer have to ask whether our contribution measures up to someone else’s. We can begin noticing where grace already moves naturally through us.

Maybe people come to you because you listen without rushing them. Maybe you see connections others miss. You organize what feels chaotic. You make space for people who usually disappear into the room. You teach, repair, create, encourage, lead, comfort, or quietly remain steady when everyone else is anxious.

Those things may not look impressive.

They do not have to.

The more aware we become of grace, the less useful comparison becomes. Another person’s gift no longer threatens our place. We may even feel relief that they carry something we do not.

That is how a body works.

Your contribution does not have to contain everything. It only needs to be yours.

There is also less second-guessing when we stop watching ourselves from the outside. We are not constantly asking, How did that look? Did I say it correctly? Was that important enough?

We become more attentive to what God is doing within us and more willing to offer it.

Grace does not need you to be impressive.

It needs room to move.

Christ, giver of grace,

Thank You for forming me with a contribution that does not need to compete with anyone else’s. Free me from measuring my life against the visible gifts of others. Make me attentive to the places where Your grace already flows naturally through me, and willing to offer that grace for the good of the body.

Write down one thing others often receive from you naturally: encouragement, steadiness, insight, care, organization, creativity, listening, or something else. Instead of minimizing it, receive it as one possible way grace moves through your life.

Scripture: Ephesians 4:4–6

There is one body and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

Reflection

Sameness can feel safe.

We often settle more easily among people who think as we do, communicate as we do, and see the world in familiar ways. Difference can make us wonder whether our own way of seeing things is threatened.

Paul describes unity differently.

One body. One Spirit. One hope. One Lord. One faith. One God and Father of all.

Then he begins talking about different gifts.

God has never seemed interested in making copies.

We have already seen ourselves described as His workmanship. That means difference is intentional. Personality, experience, ability, perspective, and gifting vary from person to person. We belong to one body without becoming interchangeable parts.

There is freedom in that.

When I trust that God is forming me, I do not need you to be like me in order for me to feel secure. I can listen without immediately comparing. I can allow your experience to teach me something. Your strength does not make mine smaller.

This is part of learning to live together after the wall has come down.

Christ has already created the possibility of unity. We are learning how to inhabit it.

That will sometimes be uncomfortable. Another person may see something we have missed. Their way of expressing faith may not feel natural to us. Their gift may reach people ours never could.

We do not have to flatten those differences.

Think of a tapestry. No single thread carries the picture. Some colors barely touch one another, yet each belongs to the design.

The Spirit gives us enough security to remain ourselves while moving toward one another.

Unity does not ask you to disappear.

It gives you a place to belong as the person God formed you to be.

God and Father of all,

You have made us unique and called us into one body. Free me from needing others to resemble me before I can love them. Give me confidence in the person You are forming and openness to the grace You are forming in others. Teach us to live together without erasing the beauty of difference.

Notice one person whose viewpoint, personality, background, or approach differs from yours. Instead of evaluating the difference, ask what gift or perspective God may have placed in them that you do not carry yourself.

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1–3

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Reflection

Paul waits three chapters before he tells us to walk worthy of our calling.

That matters.

By now, we have already been told that we are blessed, chosen, adopted, redeemed, made alive, brought near, and rooted in love. Paul is not changing direction and putting us back under pressure. The walking comes after the belonging.

For many of us, worthy is a dangerous word. We hear it and immediately start measuring. Am I praying enough? Am I patient enough? Am I becoming the kind of person God expects?

Paul seems to be asking a different question: What does a life begin to look like when grace has really taken hold of us?

He mentions humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. We can imitate those things for a while. We can make ourselves act patient. We can keep our voices calm. We can try very hard to appear humble.

But effort has limits.

Something different happens when grace begins changing us from within. We become less defensive. We do not have to win every conversation. We can give another person room. Patience becomes less about holding irritation inside and more about seeing the other person through the love we have received.

This is obedience, but its energy has changed.

We are responding to God because we have been loved. There is thankfulness in it. We want the life others encounter in us to resemble the grace that has been given to us.

Imagine leaving a home where you know you belong. You are not standing outside wondering whether someone will let you back in. You carry the security of home with you when you walk out the door.

That is where Paul begins.

You already have a place in God’s love.

Now walk from there.

A prayer of presence

God of grace,

You have already given me a place within Your love. I release the fear that I must earn what You have freely given. Let humility, gentleness, patience, and love grow from what You are forming within me. Teach me to walk from belonging with quiet confidence and responsive love.

A practice of grace

Before one ordinary task today, pause and remind yourself, “I am already held in grace.” Then do the task from that place rather than from pressure to prove yourself.

Scripture: Ephesians 3:17–21

That you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory.

Reflection

Every life sends roots somewhere.

We may root ourselves in approval, responsibility, achievement, being needed, or avoiding failure. These sources can feel stabilizing for a time, yet they remain outside us. Approval can be withdrawn. Achievement must be repeated. Usefulness changes. Understanding reaches its limit.

External affirmation creates shallow roots when we depend upon it to tell us that we are enough. We perform to please, monitor how others respond, and fear what will happen when we can no longer provide what made us valuable.

Paul prays for something deeper: that we would be rooted and grounded in love.

Love is not the reward waiting at the end of successful spiritual growth. Love is the soil from which growth begins. It is the cause. The life that flows from love is the fruit.

Paul also prays that we will know a love that surpasses knowledge. This is more than intellectual comprehension. Lived knowing appears when you feel safe enough to rest, trust God within uncertainty, recognize His presence in ordinary moments, and become more loving without forcing yourself to change.

A small ruler cannot measure this love. The measures of the world compare God’s grace with human approval, effort, or affection. They cannot reach the width, length, height, and depth of what Christ gives.

Paul’s language of fullness does not describe spiritual perfection or a permanently elevated emotional state. We live in an ongoing movement of being filled. As grace expands us, we become increasingly available to the life and love of God. Our capacity to receive and express His presence grows.

God does not erase your personality, humanity, or limitations. You are His workmanship. Even what you consider a limitation may become a place where humility opens you to a power beyond your own.

The tree rooted beside an underground river does not manufacture its life. It receives what flows beneath the surface. Weather changes. Seasons come. The hidden source remains.

God is able to do beyond what you ask or imagine because His work is not restricted to the boundary of your understanding. His power is already active within you.

You do not have to hold yourself together. You are rooted in love, strengthened from within, and continually being filled with the life of God.

A prayer of presence

God of immeasurable love,

I have sent roots into approval, usefulness, achievement, and understanding. Those sources cannot hold the whole weight of my life. Your love reaches deeper than my knowledge and remains beneath every changing season. Root me in what cannot be taken away, and keep expanding my capacity to receive Your fullness.

A practice of grace

Place both feet firmly on the floor and imagine roots extending beneath you into an underground river of God’s love. With each slow breath, release one external measure you have depended upon. Rest for a moment in the truth that your life is being filled from a deeper source.

Scripture: Ephesians 3:14–17

For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

Reflection

You can appear strong while becoming depleted inside.

You keep functioning. You care for people, solve problems, complete responsibilities, and answer the familiar question with, “I’m fine.” The outer life remains capable, but the inner person spends increasing amounts of energy maintaining the appearance.

Paul bows in prayer and asks God to strengthen believers through the Spirit in the inner person.

The inner person is the soul beneath your public role. It is the center from which you interpret life—the place where identity, desire, courage, trust, and loving presence take form. When that center is depleted, outward competence can become a mask rather than an expression of genuine strength.

The course of this world tells us that appearing unaffected is strength. We learn to act as though problems do not touch us and the cares of life do not matter. Yet forced strength depends upon the limits of our own ability. It requires constant effort and expenditure.

The Spirit strengthens differently. Shame and pressure push from outside. God’s strength rises within as an invitation into more life than the world can give.

Christ dwells within you in places deeper than your conscious awareness. As relationship with Him grows, you may notice desires, insights, courage, and movements of compassion that you could not have produced by determination alone. His presence becomes a calm center beneath the demands around you.

This strength does not make you invulnerable. It makes you more able to remain loving, truthful, and present. You can acknowledge weariness without becoming defined by it. You can receive help without believing you have failed. You can set a boundary without abandoning love.

Think of a tree whose roots reach an underground river. The branches still feel the wind, and the leaves still endure the heat. The tree survives because life is being received beneath the surface.

You do not have to work hard at being powerful. The Spirit is strengthening the life beneath your visible life. You can rest in the strength of Christ within.

A prayer of presence

Father,

You see the soul beneath every role I carry. I release the facade of being untouched and self-sufficient. Christ is dwelling within me more deeply than I can perceive, and Your Spirit is strengthening what has grown tired. I receive the calm strength that helps me remain loving, truthful, and present.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Sit with both feet on the floor and allow your shoulders to relax. Notice where you are bracing or maintaining an appearance of strength. Breathe slowly and say, “Christ strengthens me within.” Let receiving replace effort for one quiet minute.

Scripture: Ephesians 3:10–13

To the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.

Reflection

The world often calls a person wise when they know how to get the result they want.

Wisdom becomes strategy: how to gain influence, protect a position, win an argument, or make other people cooperate. Strength is measured by control and visible success.

Paul describes a wisdom the world cannot manufacture. God’s manifold wisdom becomes visible through the church.

Manifold wisdom has many expressions, colors, and dimensions. It is larger than a single person’s insight. It appears when former strangers become family, when power is expressed through service, when wounded people learn to remain present, and when distinct people are bound together by love rather than forced into sameness.

A reconciled community reveals something beyond human strategy. The world may not understand the source of its love and peace, yet it recognizes that such a life is desirable. People who were trained to compete begin to serve. Those who once protected themselves begin to listen. Difference remains, but hostility no longer decides the relationship.

The church has not always embodied this wisdom. Some believers continue to live according to what Paul calls the course of this world. Control, status, fear, exclusion, and self-protection can enter religious communities and cause deep harm.

Church hurt should never be explained away as though the pain does not matter. It reveals the painful gap between God’s intention and the ways people sometimes choose worldly power over grace.

Yet human failure does not erase God’s intention. God is still forming a people whose shared life displays what grace can do.

Imperfect people can reveal divine wisdom when they stop pretending to possess perfect strength. When we admit our limits, receive forgiveness, repair what we have harmed, and allow God to work through weakness, His power becomes more visible than our image management.

God’s wisdom is not displayed by a church that appears flawless. It is displayed by people who keep returning to grace and allow love to form a life the world could never create on its own.

A prayer of presence

God of many-sided wisdom, I grieve the ways worldly power has wounded people within Your church. I also remember Your purpose: to form former strangers into a people of grace. Free me from the need to appear impressive or right. Let humility, repair, service, and love make Your wisdom visible through us.

A practice of grace

Think of one person whose background, perspective, or experience differs from yours. Name one way their presence could expand your understanding of God’s grace. Hold them before God with openness rather than evaluation.

What would become visible if my community measured wisdom by love rather than control or success?

Scripture: Ephesians 3:8–9

To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all people see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ.

Reflection

We often expect the power of Christ to resemble our own power—only larger.

We imagine that God works through greater effort, stronger determination, better information, or more impressive ability. Then, when our own strength reaches its limit, we may quietly assume we have reached the limit of what spiritual life can offer.

Paul calls the riches of Christ unsearchable.

Unsearchable does not mean inaccessible. Paul spent his life exploring, proclaiming, and inhabiting those riches. The word points to a depth that can never be completely traced. We can search, discover, receive, and grow, yet we will never reach the boundary of Christ’s grace.

Belonging is deeper than we have known. Transformation is more possible than our history suggests. Our capacity to love and be loved is not limited to what we have experienced so far. The life of Christ cannot be contained within inherited beliefs, past disappointments, or the small ruler of human ability.

We sometimes say, “This is all there is,” when we have attempted to be spiritual through our own power. We repeat familiar practices, try harder to feel close to God, and measure the results by what we can understand. Pressure grows because the work still seems to depend on us.

The riches of grace create a different movement. Pressure compels from the outside. Grace draws from within. It awakens wonder and invites us deeper without condemning where we are now.

Your present place is not something you must reject before God can lead you forward. This may be the place where grace has brought you to learn what you are ready to receive. The lesson, relationship, limitation, or longing before you may become the doorway into greater union with Christ.

Each discovery reveals another depth. Each experience of mercy widens your capacity to receive more. Each time you release a small measure, the horizon of grace expands again.

You will never comprehend all the riches of Christ. You do not need to. You are invited to keep exploring a love that will always be larger than your understanding.

A prayer of presence

Christ Jesus,

Your riches are deeper than anything I have known or imagined. I confess the ways I have reduced Your power to the limits of my own. Where I am now is held within Your wisdom, and there is still more grace to receive. Awaken wonder and holy curiosity within me as You lead me deeper.

A practice of grace

Return to one familiar truth about Christ—grace, forgiveness, belonging, or love. Ask, “What have I made too small here?” Sit quietly for a minute and allow a larger possibility to emerge without forcing an answer.

Scripture: Ephesians 3:1–7

If it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you, how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me… of which I was made a servant according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.

Reflection

The world teaches us to recognize purpose by visibility.

A larger platform appears more meaningful. A respected title seems to carry greater influence. Public results are easier to measure than quiet faithfulness. When these standards shape our imagination, ordinary life can begin to feel too small for God’s purpose.

Paul describes his calling as a stewardship of grace. Grace was given to him, and that grace created a responsibility to notice what God was doing and participate in it.

A steward does not own what has been entrusted. A steward remains attentive to the desire of the one who entrusted it. In the same way, grace is not a spiritual possession we keep for ourselves. It is the life of God received within us and allowed to move toward others.

This does not turn grace into another demand to perform. Grace motivates from within. As we become more aware of how deeply we have been loved, forgiven, strengthened, and welcomed, the desire to share that life begins to grow naturally.

God may have entrusted grace to you through compassion, relationships, gifts, and ordinary opportunities. Even suffering can deepen your awareness of what others carry. Pain does not have to become your identity. It can teach you that self-sufficiency has limits and that God’s power becomes clearer when you stop pretending you can do everything alone.

Grace may move through the way you listen to someone who feels unseen. It may appear in patience with a difficult person, integrity in work no one applauds, or an ability to bring calm into a tense room. Other people may perform the same task, yet the presence of Christ gives the work a different quality.

You do not need a platform for grace to become visible. You need a willing life.

God invites you deeper into what He is already doing in and through you. Your calling is not to create something impressive enough to matter. It is to remain sensitive to grace and let that grace take form wherever you are.

Grace has been entrusted to you because God intends it to keep moving.

God of grace,

Everything You have given me began in Your love. I release the need for a title, platform, or visible proof that my life matters. Make me attentive to the ways Your grace is already moving through my gifts, relationships, and ordinary opportunities. I offer You a willing life.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:19–22

So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God, being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone; in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Reflection

There is a difference between visiting, attending, and belonging.

A visitor comes occasionally and knows the space belongs to someone else. An attender may remain longer but still wonder whether they are truly part of the family. Belonging means there is a place that is yours because you have been welcomed into the household.

Paul tells former outsiders that they are no longer strangers or foreigners. They are fellow citizens, members of God’s household, and living parts of the dwelling God is building.

Family members do not have to worry about overstaying.

This image can be difficult for people wounded by churches or religious systems. Words such as household, family, and belonging may carry memories of manipulation, rejection, or pressure to conform. Those wounds should not be minimized. Human communities sometimes fail to reflect the home God desires to create.

God’s household is the place we always hoped home would be: a place where love does not depend on performance, difference is not treated as a threat, and wounded people are not required to become perfect before they are welcomed.

Belonging to God does not require you to deny harm or return to an unsafe system. It means no congregation, denomination, leader, or institution has the authority to revoke the identity Christ has given you. Your deepest belonging comes from Christ within, not from the approval of a community that can be swayed by hostility or separation.

Paul also says we are being built together. Spiritual formation is personal, but it is never meant to remain isolated. Formed alone, we may emphasize separation and loneliness. Built together, we discover that we are shaping and being shaped within a family.

God does not wait until the stones are flawless before He builds. He gathers imperfect, wounded, unfinished people and makes His presence known among them. The wall that once divided them comes down, and its stones become part of a home.

Christ is the cornerstone. He, rather than uniformity or institutional approval, holds the dwelling together.

You are no longer waiting near the entrance. You are not a temporary guest. You belong to God, and your life is being joined with others into a home for His presence.

A prayer of presence

God of welcome,

You have made me a member of Your household. I remember the communities that made belonging feel unsafe, and I place those wounds within Your care. No human institution can remove the identity Christ has given me. I receive my place in Your family and consent to be formed alongside others into a home for Your presence.

A practice of grace

Place both feet firmly on the floor and let your body settle. Say slowly, “I am at home in God.” Then bring to mind one safe person or community where you can both receive and contribute to shared formation.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:15–18

He made peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility through it. He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near. For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

Reflection

The categories of us and them can offer a quick sense of security.

When people feel incomplete or uncertain, they often gather with others who share the same fears, convictions, or wounds. The group provides belonging, but it may also create an outsider. Superiority becomes a way of hiding insecurity.

Race, ethnicity, political party, denomination, social status, moral comparison, and even the distinction between strong and struggling believers can become walls. These identities may describe real differences, but they were never meant to carry the full weight of who we are.

Paul says Christ creates one new humanity. He does not merely persuade opposing groups to tolerate each other. He forms something new through the cross.

New humanity does not mean sameness. God does not erase culture, personality, history, conviction, or distinct experience. We remain different, but we are bound by a love deeper than the differences that once gave hostility its power.

Tolerance can keep people at a polite distance. Love moves closer. It creates mutual respect, awakens a desire to understand, and seeks the good of the other without trying to dominate them.

Hostility is the energy of separateness. It tells us that another person must remain beneath, beyond, or against us so we can feel whole. Yet diminishing someone else cannot heal what feels incomplete within us. It only deepens the division.

Christ gives us an identity secure enough to release the need for an enemy. His love allows strength to rise from within the soul and move outward into the world. We no longer need constant validation from a group that proves its worth by rejecting another group.

This does not mean ignoring real injustice or pretending every belief is harmless. Love can name what wounds and oppose what dehumanizes. But it refuses to surrender the humanity of the person on the other side.

God’s new humanity is formed when we begin to see others through the love that brought us near. We become curious instead of contemptuous, humble instead of superior, and willing to seek the good of people whose lives are different from ours.

In Christ, difference remains. Hostility does not have to.

A prayer of presence

God of reconciliation,

You have given me an identity deeper than every dividing label. I confess the ways insecurity has tempted me to seek belonging through superiority or exclusion. Your love holds difference without hostility. Form me within Your new humanity and teach me to see others with humility, courage, and desire for their good.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Notice one label you use to reduce a person or group to “them.” Without denying real differences or harm, replace the label with this truth: “This is a person God desires to draw near.” Allow that sentence to soften how you see them.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:14

For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition.

Reflection

We often mistake peace for the absence of conflict.

We avoid difficult conversations, suppress anger, keep everyone comfortable, or pretend that harm did not occur. The surface may remain quiet, but hostility continues beneath it. Avoidance delays conflict; it does not create peace.

Paul says something much stronger than Christ gives us peaceful feelings. He says Christ Himself is our peace.

Peace is not merely a technique we imitate from Jesus. The life of Christ is present within us. His strength, love, and reconciling presence become the source from which we learn to meet one another.

This kind of peace is not passive. It can tell the truth without contempt. It can establish a boundary without hatred. It can remain present to another person’s pain without becoming lost inside it. It is strong enough to hold difference without requiring domination, agreement, or emotional enmeshment.

The wall Paul describes separated people who had learned to define themselves against one another. Christ broke down the wall because hostility could no longer be allowed to decide who belonged near God or near each other.

There may also be a wall within you. It is the belief that you remain separate from Christ and must prove your worth before you can share His life. That wall keeps peace at a distance because it leaves you trying to produce from effort what can only flow from union.

Christ is not standing far away, offering instructions for becoming peaceful. He is present within the life He is forming. His peace can steady you when another person disapproves. His peace can help you remain yourself when emotions become intense. His peace can create enough inner strength to seek reconciliation without surrendering truth or safety.

The kingdom of God is among us because Christ is present among His people. That presence binds us together more deeply than conflict can divide us.

Peace does not require everything around you to become calm. Christ is your peace within what remains unresolved. From that strong center, a different way of being with others becomes possible.

A prayer of presence

Christ,

You are my peace. I confess the ways I have confused avoidance, agreement, or control with the strength You give. Your presence is steady within me and active between Your people. Reconcile what hostility has divided, and teach me to remain truthful, loving, and fully present.

– Amen

A practice of grace

Bring to mind one relationship marked by tension. Notice whether your first impulse is to avoid, control, please, or defend. Breathe slowly and pray, “Christ, be my peace here,” without deciding yet what the other person must do.

What would change if peace came from Christ within you rather than from controlling what happens around you?
