Scripture: Ephesians 2:4–5

But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.

Reflection

There are places within us that effort cannot repair.

We may spend years trying to correct perceived flaws, overcome unwanted patterns, or work ourselves into a closer relationship with God. We read more, try harder, make promises, and begin again. Sometimes those efforts help. Sometimes they leave us exhausted.

Spiritual deadness does not always look dramatic. It can feel like numbness, resignation, disconnection, or the quiet loss of desire. It may sound like, “Nothing is going to change,” or, “This is simply who I am.”

Fear often gives those feelings greater power. The more afraid we become of what is wrong with us, the more inwardly focused we grow. Eventually, self-repair becomes the center of the spiritual life.

Paul begins somewhere else:

But God, being rich in mercy.

God does not wait for us to become more promising before moving toward us. Mercy enters where our efforts have reached their limit. Grace is not given because our repentance was strong enough or our improvement became convincing. There is nothing we can do to make ourselves more deserving of the life God gives.

Being made alive is different from being helped to try harder.

Help may strengthen our existing effort. Resurrection creates a kind of life we could not produce on our own. God’s life begins moving within the places that had become tired, fearful, or resigned.

This does not end when we first become Christians. We may belong to God and still have much to awaken to. We may be redeemed and still struggle to receive love. We may be part of God’s family and still live as though fear has the final word.

Mercy continues to make us alive.

New life may begin before circumstances change. It may first appear as trust—the quiet recognition that God is already present and active. Desire begins to return. Possibility becomes visible. The next faithful step no longer feels entirely dependent on our strength.

You do not have to repair yourself before God can meet you.

God is already here.

Mercy is already moving toward the places where effort has grown tired. Grace is bringing life to what you thought could not change.

A prayer of presence

God, rich in mercy,

You meet me in the places where my effort has grown tired. I confess how often I have treated myself as a problem I must repair before I can rest in You. Your love is already present, and Your life is already moving. I receive the awakening that only grace can give.

A practice of grace

Name one part of yourself you have been trying to fix through criticism or pressure. Place it gently before God. Say, “Mercy meets me here,” and allow yourself to rest without creating a plan for immediate improvement.

What have you been trying to repair through effort that may need to be received into God’s mercy?

Scripture: Ephesians 1:19–23

What is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places.

The small ruler

My life can change only through the strength I can produce.

The grace I receive

The power that raised Christ is moving toward life within me.

Reflection

Power is often imagined as something dramatic.

We associate it with control, visibility, success, confidence, or the ability to command attention. Even in spiritual settings, power can become connected with charisma, emotional intensity, or extraordinary experiences.

Paul points toward a different kind of power.

The power of God is revealed in resurrection. It does not dominate life in order to prove its strength. It brings life where death appeared to have the final word.

This power is not reserved for unusually spiritual people. Paul describes the immeasurable greatness of God’s power toward us who believe. The direction matters. God’s power is moving toward us—toward the fearful places, the resigned places, the parts of life where we have stopped expecting change.

Resurrection power may not feel spectacular. It may appear as the courage to tell the truth after years of hiding. It may be the strength to forgive, the ability to receive love without resisting it, or compassion growing in a heart that had learned to remain guarded.

It may look like one faithful step taken after months of feeling stuck.

The pressures of the world can crowd out the still, small voice of God. When that happens, we may believe we need to become stronger, more forceful, or more disciplined. We try to manufacture spiritual power through effort.

But resurrection life is not something you generate.

Paul later reminds the Corinthians that we carry treasure in fragile jars of clay so that the surpassing greatness of the power may be recognized as God’s rather than ours. Your limitations do not disqualify you from resurrection power. They may become the places where its true source is most clearly seen.

You do not have to make power happen. You can become attentive to what God’s power is like.

It may be quieter than control and gentler than force. Yet it is strong enough to awaken hope, loosen shame, create courage, and bring life out of what seemed finished.

Resurrection power does not make you more commanding. It makes you more alive.

A prayer of presence

God of resurrection, I have often mistaken power for control, certainty, or personal strength. The treasure of Your life is carried within my ordinary humanity. I release the pressure to manufacture what only You can give. Let me recognize Your quiet power bringing life where fear and resignation have settled.

A practice of grace

Think of one area where you feel powerless or resigned. Instead of asking how you can force change, ask, “God, what might resurrection life look like here?” Remain quiet long enough to notice the first gentle response.

Where might you be trying to generate strength instead of receiving the life God is already bringing toward you?

Scripture: Ephesians 1:15–18a

I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints, don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.

Reflection

You can possess something without fully recognizing what you have.

A person may already be part of your life before you understand how important they will become. An ordinary conversation may later prove to be the encouragement you needed. An opportunity may sit quietly nearby until the right moment makes its purpose visible to you.

Grace is often present before we perceive it.

Paul does not pray that the believers in Ephesus will receive an entirely different spiritual life. They have already been blessed, chosen, adopted, redeemed, and sealed with the Spirit. He prays that the eyes of their hearts will be opened so they can recognize more fully what God has already given.

Spiritual sight is more than knowing additional facts. Information can help us understand God, but relationship teaches us to recognize Him.

The eyes of the heart see through awareness, trust, imagination, inward recognition, and lived experience. They begin to notice God in the ordinary places where fear once allowed us to see only threat, limitation, or absence.

Fear narrows vision. Shame turns our attention inward. Hurry allows little room to notice. Disappointment convinces us that because God did not act as expected, He may not be acting at all.

When our perception narrows, we may believe we have to discover God’s direction by ourselves. We search for the right answer while overlooking the people, resources, and invitations already before us.

God gently widens our sight. He reassures us that fear does not have to interpret everything we encounter. He reminds us that what feels uncertain is not necessarily dangerous. As the heart settles, we begin to see possibilities that anxiety had hidden.

The person we almost overlooked may become part of our next faithful step. The ability we dismissed may become a way to serve. The ordinary situation we wanted to escape may contain something God is inviting us to notice or join.

The opening of the heart’s eyes may not feel dramatic. It may begin as a quiet recognition:

God is already here.

Grace is already moving.

I am not responsible for finding everything on my own.

Dawn does not create the landscape. It reveals what was present in the darkness.

In the same way, God opens the eyes of your heart so you can recognize what grace has already placed around you.

A prayer of presence

God of light, much of Your work is already present before I recognize it. Fear, hurry, and disappointment have sometimes narrowed what I can see. My heart is becoming willing to notice Your movement in ordinary places. Open my perception to the grace, people, and possibilities You have already placed before me.

A practice of grace

Pause somewhere familiar today and look slowly at what is around you. Notice one person, resource, possibility, or quiet movement you usually overlook. Ask, “God, what are You helping me see here?”

What might already be present in your life that fear or hurry has kept you from recognizing?

TBU 99 — Eyes Opened to Resurrection Power

Love Beyond Measure | Ephesians 1:15–23

Have you ever had a moment when nothing around you changed, but the way you saw it changed?

The circumstances were the same.
The problem was still there.
The grief had not disappeared.
The pressure had not lifted.

But something changed inside you.

You could breathe again. You could see a little farther down the road. You remembered that you were not alone. You recognized an option you could not see before. Hope returned—not because the situation became easy, but because your perception widened.

That is where Paul takes us in Ephesians 1.

After telling the Ephesians that they are blessed, chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, sealed, and gathered into God’s purpose, Paul begins to pray.

And what does he pray?

Not first that they would try harder.
Not first that their circumstances would improve.
Not first that their lives would become easier.

Paul prays that the eyes of their hearts would be enlightened.

“…having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe…”
— Ephesians 1:18–19

This is a renewed perception passage.

Paul wants believers to see reality with God included.

In This Episode

In TBU 99 — Eyes Opened to Resurrection Power, we continue the Love Beyond Measure journey through Ephesians by listening to Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:15–23.

Paul prays that believers would see three great realities:

The hope of God’s calling
The riches of God’s inheritance in the saints
The immeasurable greatness of God’s power toward those who believe

Then Paul shows us what kind of power he means.

It is the power God worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead, seated Him at His right hand, placed all things under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church.

This is resurrection power.
This is enthronement power.
This is church-forming power.

And Paul says this power is toward us who believe.

The Heart of the Episode

Pressure narrows our vision.

Grief narrows our vision.
Fear narrows our vision.
Shame narrows our vision.
Weariness narrows our vision.

When life feels overwhelming, we often ask God to change the situation. Sometimes He does, and we are thankful when that happens. But Paul’s prayer moves in a deeper direction.

He prays for opened eyes.

The eyes of the heart are the soul’s capacity to recognize reality with God included.

That connects directly to the movement from Have This Mind. The renewed mind is not merely a mind filled with better religious information. The renewed mind learns to perceive reality differently.

It sees God’s presence.
It recognizes grace.
It notices hope.
It discerns what fear cannot see.

Paul is praying that truth would move from information to perception.

From doctrine to lived awareness.

From “I know that is true” to “I can finally see that this is true for me.”

Hope, Inheritance, and Power

Paul prays first that we would know the hope of God’s calling.

Biblical hope is not pretending the road is easy. It is not denial. It is not optimism.

Optimism says, “Things will probably turn out the way I want.”

Hope says, “God’s call still holds me even when the road is hard.”

Hope does not erase pain. Hope does not make hard things easy. Hope gives us enough light to take the next faithful step.

Paul also prays that we would know the riches of the glory of God’s inheritance in the saints.

That phrase reminds us that God treasures the people He is forming. The church is not a religious crowd God barely tolerates. The saints are not a problem God regrets taking on.

God sees what grace is making.

He sees the new humanity taking shape.
He sees the body of Christ being formed.
He sees the dwelling place of God by the Spirit.

Then Paul prays that we would know the exceeding greatness of God’s power toward us who believe.

Not power in the abstract.
Not power far away.
Power toward us.

And Paul defines that power by pointing to Christ.

Bible by Design Moment

The Eyes of the Heart

Paul’s prayer has a beautiful design.

He asks God to open the eyes of the heart so believers can see five realities:

Calling
Inheritance
Power
Christ above all
The church as His fullness

Each reality answers a fear many believers carry.

Calling answers the fear that my life has no direction.
Inheritance answers the fear that God does not treasure His people.
Power answers the fear that I have to generate my own strength.
Christ above all answers the fear that the powers of the age are stronger than Jesus.
The church as His fullness answers the fear that God is not really forming anything through ordinary believers.

This is not information only.

This is illumination.

Paul is praying that believers would see reality with God included.

Why This Matters

This matters because “try harder” is often inadequate pastoral counsel.

Sometimes we do need discipline. Sometimes we do need obedience. Sometimes we do need to make a decision and take action.

But many weary believers do not need more pressure first.

They need opened eyes.

They need to see the hope of God’s calling.
They need to see that they are treasured by God.
They need to see that resurrection power is toward them.
They need to see that Christ reigns above the powers that frighten them.
They need to see that the church, even with its imperfections, is still Christ’s body.

Paul does not pray that the Ephesians would become impressive.

He prays that they would become aware.

The Christian life is not powered by pressure. It is strengthened by seeing what is already true in Christ.

A Seed for The Formed Future

This Love Beyond Measure series will eventually lead us toward The Formed Future.

Ephesians 1 gives us one of the most important bridges.

The age ahead will not suffer from a lack of information.

We will have more data, more analysis, more predictions, more noise, and more tools than any generation before us.

But information is not the same as illumination.

We need enlightened hearts, not merely informed minds.

The future will not be navigated faithfully by information alone. We will need wisdom, revelation, hope, discernment, and a living awareness that Christ reigns above every power.

Paul’s prayer teaches us to ask for the kind of sight the age cannot manufacture.

Reflection Questions

Where has your vision narrowed recently?

Are you asking God only to change your circumstances, or are you also asking Him to open the eyes of your heart?

What is harder for you to see right now: the hope of His calling, the riches of His inheritance, or the greatness of His power?

What does resurrection power look like in your ordinary life today?

Where do you need to remember that Christ reigns above every rival power?

How might your view of the church change if you saw it as Christ’s body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all?

Prayer of Presence

Father, open the eyes of my heart.

Let me see the hope of Your calling, the richness of belonging to You, and the greatness of Your power at work in Christ.

Where my vision has narrowed, widen it with grace.

Where I have relied on pressure, teach me to live by Your strength.

Where the powers of this age feel overwhelming, remind me that Christ reigns above them all.

Let me live as part of His body, filled by the One who fills all in all.

Amen.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:11–14

In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.

Reflection

After receiving the promises of blessing, choosing, adoption, redemption, and purpose, another question may quietly arise:

How do I stay in the flow?

You may believe that God has welcomed you, yet still feel responsible for maintaining the connection. When prayer becomes inconsistent, life becomes distracting, or your spiritual desire feels less intense, you may wonder whether you have drifted away.

Much of life teaches us that belonging must be maintained. Approval can be lost. Positions can be taken away. Relationships can grow distant. Even our efforts at personal improvement can leave us continually measuring whether we are making enough progress.

Paul gives us a different image. He says we have been sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

A seal carried authority. It marked something as genuine and identified the one to whom it belonged. The Spirit is God’s mark upon your life, assuring you that you belong within His love and purpose.

The Spirit is more than evidence of your commitment to God. The Spirit is evidence of God’s commitment to you.

You do not have to form your life by yourself.

Some people experience the Spirit through powerful emotion, dramatic guidance, or unmistakable spiritual moments. Others experience the Spirit as a calm, reassuring presence. God knows what each person needs.

The Spirit may appear as a growing desire for God, an increased ability to receive love, an inward movement toward truth, or compassion that was not present before. You may recognize the Spirit in conviction that releases rather than condemns, strength for the next faithful step, or the quiet awareness that you are not alone.

You may occasionally feel that you have drifted, but the Spirit has not abandoned the life God is forming within you.

Being sealed does not mean that growth is finished. It means God remains present within the growth. You can honestly face what needs to change because your place is secure. You can desire to become more like Christ without living under the fear that one failure will place you outside God’s love.

You do not live on spiritual probation.

You are sealed with the Spirit. God is present, and grace is still at work.

A prayer of presence

Holy Spirit,

You are the quiet assurance of God’s presence within me. I confess how quickly I begin measuring whether I am doing enough to remain close. My life bears Your seal, even when my awareness grows dim. I rest in the calm strength of knowing that I belong.

A practice of grace

Place one hand over your heart and breathe slowly. Notice any fear that you have lost spiritual momentum or drifted too far. Let your hand remind you of God’s steady presence, and quietly say, “Grace is still at work.”

Where are you trying to prove that you still belong instead of trusting the Spirit’s continuing presence?

Scripture: Ephesians 1:9–10

Making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him, to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, in him.

Reflection

Many sincere believers have learned to imagine God’s will as a large, dramatic, and highly specific calling. They hear stories of missionaries leaving everything for a distant country or ministers receiving an unmistakable call. Ordinary work and daily life can seem less spiritual by comparison.

This creates a need to get every decision right. One wrong choice might close the door, displease God, or leave us outside the life He intended. Guidance becomes a hidden test, and we begin searching for certainty in every sign, feeling, and circumstance.

Paul speaks of the mystery of God’s will, then reveals its great direction: God is gathering all things together in Christ. The mystery is deeper than we can fully understand, yet it is not a private puzzle designed to expose whether we can decode the right instructions. God’s purpose is the restoration of creation toward the wholeness, harmony, and life seen in the opening chapters of Genesis.

Your life already belongs within that movement. Ordinary professions, relationships, creativity, service, care, and joy can all participate in what God is doing. A meaningful calling does not require a dramatic setting or public visibility. God’s will includes becoming fully alive to love and joy in Christ wherever you are.

Our gifts often become visible in the places where life feels coherent and begins to flow. We recognize them more clearly when we stop trying to become the person we imagine God would prefer. Peace with who we are clears our perception. Desire, wisdom, Scripture, relationships, opportunity, and an inward readiness can begin to point toward the next faithful step.

Past decisions, losses, delays, and detours have not removed you from God’s purpose. God can begin from where you are. A season that appeared wasted may have become a place of learning, healing, and growth.

Think of God’s guidance as a compass rather than a detailed map. The compass keeps orienting you toward Christ. You may not see the entire route, and you do not have to figure it out alone. Rest in God’s presence, remain open, and take the step that becomes faithful and available.

God’s will is a resting place you move from rather than a destination you struggle toward. You began this section wondering how to find your place. Ephesians has begun by showing you that your place was already prepared in Christ.

A Prayer of Presence

God of Restoration,

My life is already held within what You are gathering in Christ. I release the fear that one imperfect choice can place me beyond Your leading. Hope returns as I trust You to begin from where I am. I remain open to the next faithful step.

– Amen

A Practice of Grace

Stand or sit with both feet resting firmly on the floor. Imagine a compass within you gently orienting toward Christ. Ask, “What is the next faithful step available to me today?” Receive a simple step without demanding the whole map.

Where have you dismissed ordinary parts of your life as being outside God’s purpose?

Scripture: Ephesians 1:7–8

In whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence.

Reflection

For many people, forgiveness simply gets them back to even. The offense is no longer counted against them, yet affection feels uncertain and trust must be earned from the beginning. They have permission to try again while the memory of failure remains close behind.

That experience can shape the way we hear correction. When a child is criticized by an authority figure, the words may sound like more than guidance about behavior. The child may believe they are being told who they are. A mistake becomes an identity, and regret hardens into shame.

Healthy conviction speaks with a different voice. Conviction is an inward invitation to release what is damaging, limiting, or out of alignment with the life God is forming. Shame says the thing holding us back is our identity and that other people can see how diminished we are.

If forgiveness from parents or other authorities felt reluctant, cautious, or conditional, we may imagine God responding the same way. We picture Him forgiving because He must, while remaining disappointed and distant. Ephesians gives us a larger vision. In Christ we have redemption and forgiveness according to the riches of God’s grace.

Redemption reaches beyond the cancellation of guilt. It restores freedom, dignity, and a future. The sacrifice of Jesus reveals how seriously God takes our release from everything that binds us. The cross does not create a new debt of shame. It opens the way out of guilt and self-condemnation.

Forgiveness is measured by the abundance of God’s grace rather than the quality of our apology. Paul says grace abounds toward us. It is poured over us, into us, and through us until every part of life can be touched by freedom, peace, and joy.

We may still rehearse failures, hide, overexplain, or punish ourselves to prove we are truly sorry. Those habits can continue until forgiveness becomes more than a doctrine. Grace invites us to lay them down. God is not keeping us near while quietly holding the past against us.

Your failure is not the fullest truth about you. In Christ, grace has spoken a deeper word: redeemed, forgiven, and still loved.

Merciful God,

I confess the ways I have used shame to keep punishing myself. Your grace is richer than the story my failures have told. Thankfulness rises as I receive forgiveness that restores dignity and a future. I release what You have already released.

Name one failure you continue to rehearse. Imagine placing it into an overflowing stream of grace, then open your hands. Say quietly, “Forgiven means I am free to live forward.”

Scripture: Ephesians 1:5–6

Having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved.

Reflection

The need to prove that we belong often begins early. In families where love was conditional or unpredictable, a child may learn to become helpful, compliant, successful, or easy to love. School and work reinforce similar lessons. Acceptance seems to follow achievement. Security appears to depend on meeting the expectations of those with authority.

Our earliest pictures of God are often shaped by parents, teachers, pastors, and employers. When those relationships taught us to earn approval, we may assume God works the same way. We serve, pray, give, behave, and care for others while quietly hoping our usefulness will secure our place.

Paul describes God’s welcome through the language of adoption. A young child is usually adopted long before understanding what adoption means or doing anything to earn that right. The child’s place begins in the loving desire of the one who welcomes them. Ephesians says our adoption flows from the good pleasure of God’s will. God was not pressured into receiving us. Love desired us near.

Through Jesus Christ, we see the heart of the Father. Jesus lived from the assurance of being loved and carried that love toward people who felt unwanted, overlooked, or unworthy. In Him, adoption is a place already opened and secured for us.

Feelings of unworthiness may remain. Those feelings often grew from human experiences; they did not come from God, and they do not cancel the identity He has given. An adopted child may need time to trust the safety of a new home. The place is still theirs while trust grows.

You are more than a tolerated guest or a useful employee. A guest may worry about staying too long. An employee may fear becoming unnecessary. A child has a family name and a room prepared for them. Closeness with God deepens as we become more aware of His love and participate in it, while belonging remains the foundation beneath that growth.

You no longer have to work to gain your place. Your life can become the joyful expression of already belonging.

Father,

You desired to bring me near, and Your welcome was never reluctant. Some parts of me still expect belonging to disappear when I am less useful. Today I consent to being received as Your child. Thankfulness grows within the safety of Your love.

A Practice of Grace

Notice one way you tend to make yourself useful so you will feel secure or accepted. Place a hand over your heart and say, “My place is already given.” Let that truth remain with you for several slow breaths.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:4

Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love.

Reflection

Many people remember the discomfort of waiting to be chosen for a team. One name after another is called while you remain at the edge, hoping someone will decide you are good enough. Being chosen last can awaken more than embarrassment. It can leave a person feeling inadequate, powerless, and defeated before the game even begins.

Much of life operates through merit. Schools, workplaces, teams, and organizations choose people because of ability, discipline, experience, or promise. We can easily carry that pattern into our spiritual lives. God may begin to look like the captain evaluating who is faithful enough, gifted enough, or morally impressive enough to deserve a place.

Ephesians 1:4 reaches behind every opportunity to prove ourselves. God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. We had not prayed, obeyed, served, succeeded, or failed. Nothing we accomplished convinced God to choose us, and nothing we accomplish now persuades Him to keep our place open.

Paul adds two words that shape the whole verse: “in love.” Without love, holiness and blamelessness could become another test of worthiness. In love, they become the life God is already forming within those He has welcomed in Christ. Holiness grows from being chosen. It is not the entrance requirement for getting chosen.

This releases us from comparison. Another person’s spiritual maturity does not reduce your place. Their gifts do not threaten yours. Their visibility does not make you invisible to God. No one is competing for a limited portion of divine attention or approval.

Imagine your name being called before the game begins. Imagine arriving to find a place already reserved for you. You are not standing at the edge of God’s kingdom, wondering whether you have done enough to be included. In Christ, you have already been chosen in love.

You can receive that place with relief, wonder, and trust. The love of God reached you before comparison ever taught you to doubt your worth.

God of Perfect Love,

Before I could prove myself, You chose me in love. The comparisons I carry have made belonging feel scarce, yet Your welcome is abundant. Wonder rises as I consider a place prepared before my life began. I receive Your choosing with trust.

A Practice of Grace

Picture a place at a table with your name already set before it. Sit quietly with that image and notice what happens within you. Allow yourself to receive the words, “There is room for me in the love of God.”

That question sits underneath this opening episode of our new Love Beyond Measure series on The Bible Unplugged. Many people live with the quiet assumption that love has to be maintained by performance. Good behavior earns approval. Failure creates distance. Effort keeps us acceptable.

And without realizing it, we can carry that same pattern into our relationship with God.

We may not say, “God only loves me when I am doing well,” but the question still lives under the surface:

Have I done enough?
Am I pleasing God?
Did I disappoint Him too badly this time?
Do I still belong?

Paul begins Ephesians by answering that question before he ever gives the church a command.

He begins with blessing.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”
— Ephesians 1:3

Paul does not begin by telling believers to try harder, serve more, pray longer, or behave better. He begins by telling them what God has already done in Christ.

That order matters.

Before love becomes a command, it is a gift.

In This Episode

In TBU 98 — Blessed Into Belonging, we begin the Love Beyond Measure journey through Ephesians by looking at the foundation of Christian identity.

Paul gives us a cascade of belonging:

Chosen in Christ
Adopted in love
Redeemed by grace
Forgiven
Sealed with the Spirit
Gathered into God’s purpose

These are not merely doctrines to affirm. They are realities to inhabit.

A doctrine is something we know and believe. Identity is what the whole soul begins to live from.

Paul wants the church to understand that God’s love does not begin by demanding that we become worthy. God’s love gives us a place to stand.

The Heart of the Episode

Ephesians 1 teaches us that we are not spiritual afterthoughts.

Before the foundation of the world, God’s purpose in Christ already included His people. That does not make believers spiritually superior. It means our lives are held inside a purpose larger than our performance.

We are also adopted in love.

Forgiveness is wonderful, but adoption says more than forgiveness alone. I can forgive someone I am not close to. Forgiveness can clear a debt, but adoption brings someone into the family.

God does not merely clear our record. He brings us into the household.

That means we are not barely tolerated guests in the house of God. We are children who belong.

Bible by Design Moment

The Cascade of Belonging

Ephesians 1 has a clear design. Paul is not giving us a random list of spiritual blessings. He is showing us the movement of grace.

Why This Matters

Many believers try to live for God without first receiving belonging from God.

When that happens, we work in our own power, never knowing whether it was enough. We serve under the weight of insecurity. We pray while wondering whether God is disappointed. We obey as though obedience earns acceptance instead of flowing from love.

But Paul begins somewhere else.

He begins with blessing.
He begins with what God has done.
He begins with identity.

One of the key lines from this episode is:

I am not working for a place in God’s love. I am working from the place His love has already given me.

That changes the whole direction of Christian life.

We do not serve to become loved.
We serve because we are loved.

We do not obey to become adopted.
We obey as children who already belong.

We do not grow spiritually so God will finally accept us.
We grow because His infinite love is helping us see who He is, who we are, and how He is working in us.

A Seed for The Formed Future

This Love Beyond Measure series will eventually lead us toward another conversation: The Formed Future.

We are not there yet, but Ephesians is already preparing us.

The people most vulnerable to manipulation are people who do not know where they belong. If I do not know I am beloved, I will search for belonging in outrage, achievement, ideology, technology, approval, or control.

Ephesians anchors us in a belonging that cannot be manufactured by the age and cannot be taken away by the age.

A formed future does not begin with better technology, better strategies, better branding, or better predictions.

It begins with formed people.

And formed people begin here:

Blessed into belonging.

Reflection Questions

Where do you still try to earn what God has already given?

What happens inside you when you hear the word “adopted”?

Do you tend to think of God as welcoming you, tolerating you, or evaluating you?

Which phrase from Ephesians 1 do you most need to receive today: chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, sealed, or gathered into God’s purpose?

What would change this week if you lived from belonging instead of for belonging?

Prayer of Presence

Father, settle my heart in the belonging You have given me in Christ.

Help me become aware of what adoption really means.

Where I have tried to earn Your love, teach me to receive blessing.

Where I have carried shame, remind me that I am redeemed and forgiven.

Where I have felt alone, let the Spirit bear witness that I am Yours.

Let me live from love, not for love.

Amen.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

Reflection

Much of life teaches us that rewards follow good performance. We earn a good grade, receive a promotion, or gain approval because we met the expectation. When we fall short, consequences follow. That pattern may be necessary in many parts of life, yet it can quietly shape the way we imagine our relationship with God.

We may believe God loves us while still feeling that closeness must be maintained. A good week of prayer, Scripture, service, and self-control reassures us. A distracted week leaves us wondering whether we have drifted too far. Without meaning to, we begin treating blessing as a reward for spiritual effort.

Paul begins Ephesians from a completely different place. Before offering a single instruction, he announces that God has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ. God did not examine our earthly performance and decide whether we deserved access to heavenly grace. The blessing begins with God’s action, and it reaches us through Christ.

That changes the purpose of spiritual disciplines. Prayer is no longer a way to convince God to remain near. Scripture is no longer proof that we deserve His approval. Worship, obedience, generosity, and service become expressions of a relationship already given. They grow from joy, peace, rest, and belonging.

Perhaps you have been trying to tread water spiritually, working constantly to keep your head above the surface. Grace offers a different experience. Imagine the loving arms of God wrapped around you, holding you securely enough to stop struggling for a moment. You are already loved. You are already held. What you do can now rise from that assurance.

Relief is a holy beginning. You do not enter this journey under evaluation. You awaken inside the blessing God has already spoken over your life in Christ.

God of every blessing,

I have often measured Your nearness by how well I was doing. I remember now that Your grace was present before my effort began. Relief settles into the places that have been striving. I rest for this moment in the love that already holds me.

Sit with your hands open for one quiet minute. Notice any impulse to evaluate how well you are doing spiritually. Let your shoulders soften as you say slowly, “I begin inside blessing.”
