Scripture: Genesis 28:16

Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t know it.”

Reflection

We often imagine that meaningful encounters with God happen somewhere else.

At church. On retreat. During prayer. In a particularly moving moment. After life settles down. When we become more disciplined. When the problem is resolved. When we finally have time.

Meanwhile, ordinary life keeps happening: coffee, traffic, work, laundry, appointments, interruptions, conversations, meals, bills, the same hallway, the same desk, the same people.

It is easy to spend so much time searching for a more spiritual moment that we overlook the one we are standing in.

Jacob nearly did. He awakened after an encounter with God and realized that God had been present before Jacob recognized it. That may be one of the most important discoveries of the spiritual life.

Coming back to the present is more than a technique for calming yourself. It is more than mindfulness. It is not simply learning to feel better. You return because God is here.

The present moment is the only place where you can actually love. The only place you can forgive. The only place you can listen. The only place you can choose. The only place you can act. The only place you can receive. The only place you can say yes to God.

Yesterday may contain wisdom. Tomorrow may contain possibility. But relationship with God always happens here.

That changes what returning means. When you notice yourself drifting backward, forward, or outward and come back, you are not simply returning to yourself. You are returning to presence with God.

And with that realization comes purpose and agency: I do not have to live somewhere else. There is something available here. There is something I can become here. There is something I can do here.

You are not trapped in the present. You are being given the present.

Formation Practice

At least once today, stop where you are. Do not create a special spiritual setting. Let the place be ordinary: a kitchen, an office, a parked car, a hallway, a backyard. Notice your surroundings. Let yourself take the breath that comes. Then pray slowly: “I am here. You are here. Show me what is mine to do here.” Do not demand an answer. The practice is presence. The next faithful step can emerge from there.

Prayer of Formation

God,

I have spent so much time searching for You somewhere else: in another season, another circumstance, another version of myself. Open my eyes to Your presence here. Let me receive this moment without needing it to become something else first. Ground me in Christ. Make me available to love, listen, respond, create, serve, rest, speak, or act as You lead. I am here. You are here. That is enough to begin.

Reflection

Sometimes it is not the past or future that pulls us away. Sometimes it is simply everything around us.

A message appears on the phone. Someone walks into the room in a bad mood. A headline makes you angry. Someone posts something you cannot believe. A request arrives. A problem develops. And almost instantly, your attention belongs to it.

Then your emotional state may begin to belong to it too.

We live surrounded by things asking us to react: Look at me. Think about me. Be afraid of me. Be offended by me. Fix me. Answer me. Have an opinion about me.

The loudest thing can easily become the most important thing. But those are not the same.

You are allowed to choose what deserves your attention. That is part of spiritual agency. Something can happen around you without automatically becoming the center of what happens within you. Someone else’s mood does not have to become yours. A headline does not have permission to determine the emotional character of your morning. Another person’s urgency does not automatically establish your priorities.

This does not mean withdrawing from the world. Quite the opposite. When you stop reacting automatically to everything around you, you become more capable of actually responding to what matters.

You can see the person instead of simply absorbing their emotion. You can evaluate the problem instead of becoming the problem. You can hear the news without handing it your peace. You can care deeply without being controlled.

The life in front of you deserves your presence. But not everything trying to get your attention deserves equal access to you.

Formation Practice

Notice the moment something outside you tries to set your internal tone today. Before reacting, pause and ask three questions: What actually happened? What am I adding to what happened? What deserves my response? If action is needed, act. If someone needs love, love. If something is not yours to carry, leave it alone. Return your attention deliberately to the life God has placed in front of you.

Prayer of Formation

God,

So many things compete for my attention. Teach me not to confuse what is loud with what is important. Help me engage the world without surrendering my center to it. Give me wisdom to know what deserves my response, courage to respond when needed, and freedom to release what is not mine. Make me present to the life in front of me.

Scripture: Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

Reflection

The future has a strange ability to create real emotions about things that are not yet real.

Nothing has happened, but you have already lived the meeting in your head. You have heard what the doctor might say. You have imagined the argument. You have watched the plan fail. You have calculated what happens if the money runs short.

Your body responds to a future your mind has created. The anxiety is real. The future producing it may not be.

This does not mean planning is wrong. Planning can be wise. Preparation can be faithful. Jesus is not telling us to become careless about tomorrow. He is showing us the difference between preparing for the future and emotionally relocating into it.

You can prepare for tomorrow while still living today.

There is freedom in realizing: tomorrow does not need me yet. Tomorrow may require courage, but you do not need tomorrow’s courage today. Tomorrow may contain grief, but you do not have to grieve it before it arrives. Tomorrow may require a decision, but you do not have to make a decision that is not yet yours to make.

God gives grace in time. There is today’s grace for today’s life. When tomorrow becomes today, there will be grace there too.

That realization restores something anxiety quietly steals: agency. Anxiety says, “You must live every possible future now.” Grace asks, “What is actually yours today?” Perhaps there is one call to make, one question to ask, one appointment to schedule, one amount to set aside, or one conversation to prepare for. Do that. Then come back.

Formation Practice

When you discover yourself living in a future scenario today, ask: “Is there something I can faithfully do about this now?” If yes, identify the next concrete action and take it. Then ask, “Is there anything else that belongs to today?” If not, release the rest. Let the releasing breath remind you: I do not have to experience tomorrow’s emotions before tomorrow arrives.

Prayer of Formation

God,

You are already present in every tomorrow I fear. Keep me from trying to arrive there before You have led me there. Give me wisdom to prepare, courage to act when action is mine, and freedom to release what has not yet been given to me. Give me today’s grace for today’s life.

Moses did not begin that morning by traveling to a sacred destination. He led a flock into the wilderness and went about the ordinary work in front of him.

Then he noticed a bush that burned without being consumed.

God was present before Moses turned aside. God had already seen Israel’s suffering, heard their cries, and known their sorrow. When Moses gave the moment his attention, an ordinary place became recognizable as holy ground—and recognition became participation in God’s work.

Awareness was not the destination. The holy encounter became a calling.

Formation Practice

Choose one ordinary place where you spend part of each day: your kitchen, desk, car, workplace, favorite chair, or the place where you care for someone. Pause before beginning your normal activity and move through these five movements.

Present: Name where you are without judging it.

Presence: Remember that God’s nearness does not depend on your ability to feel it.

Attention: Ask, “What deserves a second look?”

Recognition: Ask, “What becomes visible when I see this moment in the light of God’s character?”

Participation: Ask, “What is mine to do here?”

Keep the answer concrete. Listen. Make the call. Offer the apology. Honor the boundary. Complete the work with care. Give your attention to the person God has placed before you.

Scripture: Philippians 3:13–14

Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Reflection

The past has remarkable emotional power. A memory can enter your mind in a fraction of a second and bring with it feelings that have been waiting for years.

Regret is especially powerful. “I should have known... I should have said something... I should have stayed... I should have left... I should have become more than this by now...”

Sometimes we tell ourselves we are thinking about the past because we are trying to understand it. And sometimes we are. But there is a difference between learning from yesterday and moving back into it emotionally.

You can often feel when the move has happened. The event is over, but your body responds as though it is happening again. The conversation ended years ago, but you are still arguing your case. The decision cannot be changed, but you are still trying to make a different one.

Paul does not pretend his past was meaningless. His story held achievement, failure, violence, transformation, loss, and grace. Yet he refused to make the past his permanent residence.

That is different from forgetting. You can remember without returning to live there. You can grieve without surrendering today’s life to yesterday’s loss. You can regret something without requiring yourself to suffer repeatedly as payment for having done it.

And sometimes the very reason you would make a different choice now is that you are different now. The wisdom looking backward did not exist in exactly the same way when the decision was made. That is part of formation.

Grace lets you say, “That happened. It matters. It is part of my story. But it is not where I live now.” You do not have to live in another time and carry its emotions into this one.

Formation Practice

When a regret surfaces today, do not immediately argue with it or push it away. Notice where it has taken you. Ask, “Is there something yesterday is teaching me that belongs in today?” If there is, receive the wisdom: make the apology, change the behavior, grieve what was lost, or do what can actually be done now. Then release what cannot be changed and say, “That was then. I am here now.”

God,

You know every part of my story. You know the choices I would make differently, the words I wish I could retrieve, and the roads I sometimes imagine taking again. Help me receive wisdom from the past without returning there to live. Let grace meet the person I was, and let me become present to the person You are forming now.

Scripture: Psalm 118:24

This is the day that Yahweh has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

Reflection

You can leave the present moment remarkably quickly.

Sometimes all it takes is a thought. A memory reminds you of something you wish you had done differently, and suddenly you are five years in the past. The conversation is happening again. The disappointment feels fresh. You begin wondering what might have happened if you had chosen differently.

Or a thought about tomorrow appears. What if the meeting goes badly? What if the test result is not good? What if the money is not enough? What if someone needs something from you that you do not know how to give? Your body is still sitting in the same chair, but your inner life has moved somewhere else.

Something outside you can do it too. A news alert. An email. Someone’s expression. A comment on social media. A person walking into the room. Your attention follows the trigger, and your internal state begins changing with it.

Trying to keep this from ever happening does not work very well. In fact, it can create another problem: guilt or self-consciousness about the fact that your mind wandered in the first place.

The spiritual practice is not perfect concentration
The practice is… noticing.

There is a moment when you realize, “I am not here anymore.” That realization is grace. You can name where you went: backward into regret, forward into worry, outward into something or someone demanding your attention. Then you can recognize something even more important: you do not have to stay there.

Sometimes that recognition is felt in the body before you have many words for it. A deeper breath comes. Your shoulders loosen. Something inside stops bracing. I think of it as a releasing breath. The breath is not a technique to perform. It is often a sign that your whole state has begun to change.

You have recovered agency. You can say, “I do not have to keep living there.” This is the day God has actually given you. And God is already here.

Formation Practice

Do not try to remain perfectly present today. Practice returning. When you notice your attention has traveled somewhere else, ask: Where did I go? Name it without judgment. Then release the need to stay there and return with the words: “I am here. God is here.” If a releasing breath comes, simply notice it. Then ask, “What is mine to do in this moment?”

Prayer of Formation

God,

I leave the present so easily. A thought pulls me backward, a worry carries me forward, or something around me captures my attention. Help me notice without judging myself. Remind me that I do not have to stay wherever my thoughts have carried me. Bring me back to You. Bring me back to here.

Scripture: Psalm 46:10–11

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted on the earth.” Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge.

Reflection

The mind can leave the present without the body moving at all.

We replay what happened yesterday, revise conversations that cannot be changed, rehearse problems that have not arrived, and prepare answers to questions no one has asked.

We remain physically here while our attention lives somewhere else.

Sometimes this mental movement is necessary. Memory helps us learn. Imagination helps us prepare. But when we remain away too long, we lose contact with the only place where life can be lived.

The words of the psalm offer a way home:

Be still, and know that I am God.

This is more than an instruction to become quiet. It is an invitation to release the need to manage every moment and return to awareness of God.

For me, these words have become a breath prayer.

Be still...

...and know that I am God.

The rhythm draws my attention inward. Not so I can become absorbed in myself, but so I can listen again at the center where Christ dwells.

God calls us home to the inner self so that we can see beyond ourselves more clearly.

From that center, the world comes back into view. We notice what is happening within us while it is happening. We become more attentive to another person, the atmosphere of the room, the needs and possibilities of the moment, and what God may be doing here.

The present is where discernment becomes possible because it is the only place where obedience can actually occur.

Here does not mean that every circumstance is good. It does not ask us to approve of everything we find or surrender the hope that life can change.

Here means that we consent to meet reality with God.

We stop demanding that yesterday release us through endless analysis. We stop demanding that tomorrow reassure us before we live. We receive this moment as the place where grace is available.

When we return fully to where we are, we become able to recognize what is ours to do and how we are meant to do it.

The action may be courageous or quiet. It may require speaking, waiting, creating, apologizing, resting, or beginning. Whatever its form, faithfulness starts by becoming present enough to hear.

You have been formed for a future you cannot fully see.

Now come back to here.

God is here. You are here.

And this is where the next journey begins.

A Simple Practice

Take three slow breaths. With each breath, pray the words below. Then name what you see, what you feel, and who is present. Ask one final question: “God, what is mine to do here?”

Prayer of Presence

God,

Call me home from yesterday and tomorrow. Meet me at the center of my life and open my eyes to this moment. Help me see what is happening around me, recognize what is mine to do, and respond from the life of Christ within me. Prepare me to receive the holiness of the life before me.

Scripture: John 15:4–5

Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Reflection

Faithfulness is a beautiful word until we try to locate it.

In the abstract, faithfulness can seem limitless. We imagine giving ourselves completely to God, making a great difference, answering an important calling, or offering our lives to work that matters.

But faithfulness never remains in the abstract.

It has a location.

It happens within this body, among these people, inside these responsibilities, through these opportunities, and within these limits.

Our culture can make that particularity feel too small. We are trained to measure impact by size: the larger platform, the more visible achievement, the wider influence, the bigger result.

Even calling can become entangled with a success-and-productivity mindset. We begin to assume that the largest work must make the largest difference.

Jesus gives us another image.

A branch remains in a vine.

Fruit does not begin with the branch trying harder to become impressive. Fruit begins with connection. The branch receives life from a source deeper than its own effort, and that life becomes visible where the branch has been placed.

Faithfulness begins at the center where Christ dwells.

As that center is strengthened, the life of Christ grows outward into particular relationships, responsibilities, creativity, service, work, and rest. The visible action matters, but it receives its life from a deeper source.

Our limits help us recognize the shape of that life.

The body may tell us that we are doing too much. The inner life may become restless, depleted, or scattered when we spend ourselves on work that is not ours. We may discover that an urgent task is not truly important, while a quiet responsibility we nearly overlooked is precisely where love is asking to take shape.

Limits are not always barriers to faithfulness.

Sometimes they are boundaries that reveal its location.

They help us ask: What has God actually entrusted to me? Who is within the reach of my care? What work carries life rather than merely pressure? What can I release because it belongs to someone else—or because it does not need to be done at all?

The future is shaped by people who become faithfully present to their real lives.

A conversation, a boundary, a page written, a person cared for, a promise kept, or a needed rest may seem small beside the problems of the world.

Yet this is how the life of Christ enters the world: rooted in God, embodied in a person, and expressed in a particular place.

A Simple Practice

Name three locations of faithfulness in your life today: one relationship, one responsibility, and one limit. Ask Christ what is yours to do within each one—and what is not yours to carry.

Prayer of Presence

Lord Jesus,

Keep me rooted in You. Free me from measuring faithfulness by visibility, size, or recognition. Let Your life bear fruit through the people, responsibilities, opportunities, and limits You have entrusted to me. Show me what is mine to do here.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:12–13

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known. But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Reflection

The future usually appears in our imagination as something dramatic.

It is the day when the decision is finally made, the goal is reached, the loss occurs, the technology changes everything, or the life we have been preparing for begins.

But when the future arrives, it rarely announces itself.

It becomes an ordinary morning.

We wake, move through familiar routines, respond to messages, care for people, make choices, and do the next thing. A day that once existed only in our imagination quietly becomes today.

About a year ago, I found it difficult to motivate myself to do the things that would move my goals and dreams forward. The desire was present, but the energy to act often felt distant.

Now I frequently find myself eager to see what I can do next.

The future did not suddenly become certain. Every obstacle did not disappear. Something changed within me, and that inward change altered the way I entered an ordinary day.

This is how formation reaches the future.

It does not wait until the world has changed. It becomes visible in the way we live today.

Paul writes that faith, hope, and love remain even while our vision is incomplete.

Faith carries the memory of God’s presence through everything that has already been. Hope gives us a settled confidence about what is still becoming. Love brings us fully into the present, because love can only be given now.

Love notices the person before us.

Love receives the joy available in this moment.

Love hears what is happening within another person instead of remaining absorbed in its own plans and fears.

This may be why love is greatest.

Faith reaches backward toward remembered grace. Hope reaches forward toward what God may yet do. Love opens its hands in the present and gives itself here.

When we live only in fear of the future, we miss what is happening within us now. We also miss what is happening within others. A worried expression goes unnoticed. A moment of delight passes without being shared. Someone we love is beside us, but our attention is somewhere else.

The future does not require you to abandon today in order to prepare for it.

The strongest way to meet tomorrow may be to become fully available to the love that can be lived today.

A Simple Practice

Pause three times today. First, remember one way God has been faithful. Second, entrust one future concern to God. Third, give your full attention to one person or experience directly before you.

Prayer of Presence

God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow,

In episode 111 of The Bible Unplugged, we come to that moment in The Formed Future. Crossing a threshold does not mean fear has disappeared or that the future has become clear. It means we have enough formation, enough evidence of God’s faithfulness, and enough confidence to move even while uncertainty remains.

When Preparation Becomes Avoidance

Preparation is wise. But sometimes one more round of preparation is really fear wearing respectable clothes. Perfectionism can protect us from exposure. If the book never leaves the computer, nobody can review it. If the idea never becomes public, nobody can reject it. If the conversation never happens, we never have to face the other person’s response.

That is why thresholds often expose something deeper than fear of failure: fear about what failure might say about us. Imposter syndrome, the need for approval, and uncertainty about our identity can keep us preparing long after we actually know enough to move.

Being willing and being ready are not quite the same. Willingness says, “God, I am open to what you have for me.” Readiness means we have crossed enough of the internal barrier—fear, perfectionism, doubt, and the need for approval—that we can finally cross the external threshold too.

The Witness Behind Us

Hebrews 11 is not a collection of stories promising that faith always produces the outcome we want. Some people in the chapter experienced remarkable victories. Others suffered. Some never saw the promise completed in their lifetime. Together, their lives testify that God can be trusted even when the road is difficult and the ending is not yet visible.

That is why Hebrews 12 begins by telling us to run the race set before us. The “great cloud of witnesses” is more than an image of spectators watching from heaven. Their lives bear witness to what God has done. They give us evidence.

When we stand at a threshold, we do not stand there with only uncertainty in front of us. We also carry evidence behind us: seasons we survived, skills God developed in us, moments of provision, and things we once thought we could never do that are now part of who we are.

Bible by Design: Formation → Threshold → Step → Participation

Formation — God has often been shaping capacities, character, experience, and trust long before we understand where they will be used.

Threshold — Formation eventually meets decision. There comes a moment when we must decide whether we will remain in preparation or move.

Step — A threshold is crossed by action. Record. Publish. Send. Begin. Say yes—or, when faithfulness requires it, say no.

Participation — The threshold is not the destination. Crossing it brings us into the place where a new kind of learning can happen. We are formed further by participating in what God has prepared us to do.

The important truth is this: you are not crossing the threshold as the person you were when the journey started. Formation has already changed the person who is taking the step.

What Cannot Come With You

Thresholds often require release. The safety of “the way I’ve always done it” can become an attachment. So can perfectionism, the need for universal approval, an outdated identity, or the belief that we should not move until we feel completely confident.

Crossing does not mean we have no fear. It means fear is no longer getting the final vote. A formed person carries steadiness, discernment, love, courage, trust, and confidence based not merely on what they think they can do, but on what they know God has already done in them before.

A Personal Threshold

Publishing my first Sunset novel taught me this firsthand. I edited and reviewed it more than necessary because publishing meant losing control of how the book would be received. More recently, publishing work such as Broken Heart… Wounded Soul and Heaven’s First Breath has created a different kind of threshold. These books carry deeper pastoral convictions about grief, suffering, God, presence, healing, and what it means to remain human when life hurts.

That kind of work is vulnerable. But what God has formed over years of ministry may be useful to someone else only when it is allowed to leave the safety of preparation and become participation.

Formation Practice: Name the Threshold

Take a few minutes this week and identify one thing you have been preparing for. Then ask:

• What am I still preparing for that may actually be ready for action?

• What fear or attachment is keeping me on this side of the threshold?

• What evidence do I already have of God’s faithfulness and formation in my past?

• What action would actually cross the line—not another preparation step, but the threshold action itself?

TBU 110 gave us the movement: Light → Step → More Light → Path. Sometimes the next faithful step keeps us on familiar ground. Sometimes it carries us across a threshold. When it does, we do not cross with only what we can see ahead of us. We carry the evidence of what God has already done behind us.

Reflection

For thirty-one days, we have asked what it means to become a formed future.

We have considered pressure, fear, attention, wisdom, love, vocation, and the kind of person God is shaping for a world we cannot fully see.

That has been an intense journey.

Before we begin another series, we need room to breathe.

These four days will be simpler. They are not four additional chapters of The Formed Future, and they are not an early beginning to Formed for This. They are a threshold—a place to pause long enough to notice what has taken root.

Spiritual lessons give us knowledge. Better choices give us action. Both matter. But formation reaches deeper than either one.

Formation works at the root of the soul. It reshapes the person who understands and the person who acts. Over time, what God has been doing within us becomes the life from which we live.

Paul prayed that the believers in Ephesus would be strengthened with power through the Spirit in the inner person. He did not describe power as control over circumstances or protection from every difficult future. He described Christ dwelling within them and rooting them in love.

This is the powerful center you carry into the future.

It is not a hard center that refuses to feel. It is not self-confidence pretending that nothing can hurt you. It is the living presence of Christ becoming more deeply at home within you.

You may already recognize evidence of that formation.

Perhaps you feel more settled. You can slow down without feeling that the future is demanding your constant attention. You are clearer about what needs to be done, but also about why it matters. Fear may still speak, yet it no longer makes every decision.

The circumstances around you may not have changed. The uncertainties ahead may still be real. But they no longer have unquestioned access to the center of your life.

Christ is there.

And Christ within you is stronger than any future arriving around you.

Formation becomes a life when that inward presence begins to shape your pace, your attention, your choices, your relationships, and the way you enter an ordinary day.

You do not need to force that life into existence.

Pause and notice it.

Receive it as grace.

A Simple Practice

Sit quietly with one hand over your heart. Ask: “Where am I more settled than I was? Where am I responding from a deeper center?” Do not evaluate your progress. Receive whatever you notice as evidence that Christ is becoming more fully at home within you.

Prayer of Presence

Christ, dwell deeply within me. Strengthen my inner being through Your Spirit and root me in Your love. Help me recognize what You have already formed within me. Let that formation become the life from which I meet this day and every future still ahead. Amen.
